At its meeting on Friday, September 27, 1966, the
Faculty of Science again considered the classification of degrees.
The classification of honors degrees as stated in Senate paper
S-118 had been accepted by Faculty on several occasions. However,
I reported to Faculty that there appeared to be a consensus amongst
all three Faculties that the classification adopted for the honors
degree should be extended to cover the majors program on
attainment of similar academic standing as reflected in Grade
Point Averages.
The following motions were passed:
Honors and Honors First Class
For Honors standing on
graduation,
a student must normally obtain a
cumulative Grade Point Average of
3.0 computed on all courses. Students
with a cumulative Grade Point Average
of 3.5 in the Honors Program, computed
on all courses, will normally be
recommended for Honors First Class.
First Class in the Majors Program
Students with a cumulative Grade
Point Average of 3.5 in the major
program, computed on all courses,
will normally be recommended for
First Class standing..
The
meeting was attended by 49 faculty members representing
more than half of the total Faculty of Science teaching this semester.
I am happy to report that these motions received unanimous approval.
This is a reflection of the keen desire of members of faculty to
obtain a rational and uniform degree classification for students at
• ?
this University.

Motion Carried."
Faculty expressed continued opposition to the procedure of categorizing
degrees. It was felt, however, that a decision on classification snould obtain
for the entire University.
It was also agreed that if a student in an Honors program should fail to qualify
for an Honors degree, he may be awarded a General degree provided t.at the
latter would be determined on the basis of 120 semester hour credit3 and not
132 semester hour credits.
In exceptional circumstances, Faculty may recommend first-class standing when
the cumulative GPA is below
3.5. .

Upon the request of Senate, the Faculty of Arts ha re-considered
its. recommendation as shown
in
Paper S-123 and
now wish
to recommend
the following pattern:
General Degree
?
Honors Degree
?
Cumulative CPA
1st Class
?
1st Class
?
at least3.5
2nd Class
?
Honors
?
at least 3.0
Pass
?
at least 2.0
In special cases, students whose cumulative CPA is close to 3.5
may receive special consideration on the overall record and be
reommended by the Faculty for First Class standing in the Honors
or General degree.
A student in the Fionors progran who fails to qualify for an
Honors degree can be awarded a general degree, provided the latter
- would be determined on the basis of 120 credits, not 132.
A cumulative CPA would be calculated on all courses makingup. the
total credits for the degree.
