Honors degrees and First Class

As you know, the Faculty of Education does not have an Honors program. The
Faculty, however, is concerned with requirements for Honors degrees and First
Class Standing and urges the other two Faculties to define with greater clarity
those requirements.
It is the view of the Faculty of Education that degrees can be classified in
terms of First Class Standing, but that no further classification should be made.
We would urge as well that some commonality should exist in the criteria used
to specify First Class Standing.

Each of the departments of the Faculty of Science
has reported its recommendation for the granting of first class
honors standing. There is a uniform consensus that a minimum
standing of a grade point average of 3. 0 be required for honors
and that first class honors designation be given to candidates with
a grade point average of 3. 5 or higher.
There was an indication from several of the departments
that the initiative for recommending candidates in their subjects be
left with the departments and a degree of departmental discretion be
permitted within the regulations.
