SUBJECT: REQUIREMENTS TO CONTINUE IN GRADUATE STUDIES
Paper S.259 was submitted to Senate and referred back for further consideration.
The following was approved by the Senate Committee on Graduate Studies on
November 13, 1969, and is submitted to Senate for approval.

Requirements to Continue in Graduate Studies
1. Unclassified Students
Unclassified Students - The grade points obtained in undergraduate courses
which are required as make-up work before clear admission to a graduate
program, will appear on the student's undergraduate transcript and will
not be used to calculate the CPA necessary for continuance in the graduate
program or for the award of the graduate degree.

Students with Clear Admission to a Graduate Program
i) Each graduate student will have a Supervisory Committee as soon as
possible but no later than the middle of the second semester after
the student's clear admission to the graduate program. The Supervisory
Committee will approve the area of research and the graduate, and
undergraduate, courses that the student will be expected to take for
credit in keeping with the Calendar requirements for the degree.
This information, together with the composition of the Supervisory
Committee, will be transmitted by the chairman of the Departmental
Graduate Studies Committee to the Faculty Committee on Graduate
'Studies for approval no later than the end of the second semester of
study. Any subsequent changes in the composition of the Supervisory
Committee, area of research or course requirements, will be transmitted
by the chairman of the Departmental Graduate Studies Committee to the
Faculty Graduate Studies Committee for approval and the Senate Commitlee
on Graduate Studies for information, with reasons for change.
ii) If a student takes courses in addition to those that are required for
the degree as specified in 2(i) above, those courses will appear on
the student's transcript and the grade points obtained in these courses
will be counted towards calculation of the CGPA as under 2(iv)
• iii) A student may complete a course(s) for his degree program at another
institution of higher learning. For such off-campus work the Supervisory
Committee mus.t seek prior approval of the Faculty Graduate Studies
Committee. If the course is to be used for credit towards the degree,

the student would be required to obtain a grade point of at least 3.0
(or its equivalent).

iv)
Unless specifically exempted by the Faculty Graduate Studies Committee,
a student shall be required to maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point
average to continue in the graduate program. This cumulative grade
point average will be calculated on all courses taken at Simon Fraser
University subsequent to the student's clear admission to the graduate
program.
v)
To receive a graduate degree, a student must have a cumulative grade
point average of at least 3.0., calculated on all courses taken at this
University required for the degree as specified on the student's
program by the Supervisory Committee.
vi)
For graduate level courses, taken at Simon Fraser University, the
following points values shall apply:
A - 4 points
