I am enclosing a recommendation, from the Senate
Committee on the Methods of Appoiiitment, Responsibilities
and Tenure of Heads and Deans, on the method of appointment
of an Academic Vice-President. In view of the urgency of
this matter expressed by many people, I hope this
recommendation .can be brought before Senate as quickly as
possible.

Recommendation from the Senate Committee on the Methods of
Appointment, Responsibilities and Tenure of Heads and Deans.
We were asked by the Acting President to consider urgently
the general method Of appointment of an Academic Vice-President. We
have considered the appropriate section of the interim Council report
(section 2, para
4-20),
and make the following recommendations to
Senate:
(i) That a selection committee as described by Interim
Council be used in all future selections of an Academic
Vice-President. The composition of this committee shall
be the (Acting) President, the three Deans of the Faculties,
one representative elected by each Faculty, and two faculty
members elected at-large.
(2)
That in view of the present situation in which a
Presidential Search Committee is already in existence,
the three Faculties be asked to nominate to the Vice-.
Presidential Search Committee the three members of the
Presidential Search Committee. The two faculty members a

large should he elected as quickly as possible by normal
procedures.
(3)
That a temporary
-
Vice-Presidential Search Committee
be instituted immediately, as a sub-comrnittee of the
Presidential Search Committee; this sub-committee shall
consist of the Acting President, the three Deans and the

three faculty members. This sub-committee shall auto-
matically transfer its responsibilities to the committee
described in (i) and (2) above when the latter is constituted.
