SENATE COIITTEE ON EXAIIINATION AND GRADING PRACTICES
Background
In the
Spring of 1967 Senate on a Motion by K. E. Rieckhbff and
A. R,
MacKinnon approved the formation of an ad hoc Senate Committee to
detrmine examination systems and grading procedures currently in use in
the University, and to make recommendations to Senate. A Committee
consisting of Dr.W. Williams, Dr. L. Kendall, Dr. L.M. Smith and Dr. E. J.Weils
was struck, and during the. period Spring 1967 to Spring 1.968 this Committee
undertook a number of studies of examination and grading practices. The
Committee's report to Senate dated July 31st 1967 received wide circulation
and commendation. The Committee has been essentially dormant since the
Spring of 1968.
Analysis
There is a continuing need to examine examination and grading
practices within the Univers
i Ly.
Faulty practices may alter enrolment
patterns and may produce distortions of the academic program and may
havc budgetary implications. As we move from the concepts of a single
University to.the concept of a system of higher education involving' cthar
universities as well as junior colleges, propel: examination and grading
. practices will become even more important since these practices affect:
student transfer. There is a need for a continual monitoring of these
rract,ces within the University.
Recommend at ion
It is
recommended that Senate establish a standing committee. on
examination and grading practices.
