UNDERGRADUATE CALENDAR SUBMISSION ION
From
Acting Vice-President, Academic
Date...........................

In accordance with the Motion passed at the last meeting
of Senate, I in conjunction with a representative of the Mathematics
Department, have examined the Mathematics submission for the 1969-1970
Undargraduate Calendar, in order to determine what portions of the
submission represent a routine reorganisation of the existing program,
and what portion represents new commitments. My findings are summarized
on the attached sheet which I would like to submit to Senate for its
consideration at its next meeting.

.
The new courses at the
lower division level which are proposed
represent largely a replacement of the old
lower division courses.
The
not expansion of the program is
only three semester hours, and these three
semester hours do not represent
a change in the Department's orientation,
but are the result of increasing
the flexibility of the program by
separating the pure and applied
streams.

The new Mechanics courses which are proposed are largely
replacements of other courses which are now discontinued. The proposed
new program does represent e two-unit expansion in the area of Mechanics,
but this expansion again
does
not represent a change in Departmental
orientation and is simply the result of restructuring the program in order
that it better meet the requirements of the applied mathematicians.

.
The new program produced in this area represents a sixteen--unit
expansion of course offerings.
Although no change in Departmental orientation
is
involved,
these
additional
courses neverth1ess represent a major change and
the Department of Mathematics
and the Faculty of Science have beLn asked to
present documentation regarding the priority assignments of the paposed changes.
