MR. H. M. EVANS
SECRETARY OF SENATE
Subject
AMENDMENT TO B.C. GRADE XII ADMISSI?
REQUIREMENTS
From ?
DR. D. MEAKIN, SECRETARY
SENATE UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSIONS BOARD
Date ?
26th OCTOBER, 1970
C
At a recent meeting of the Senate Undergraduate Admissions Board,
a revision of the calendar entry describing the admission require-
ments for applicants from British Columbia Grade XII was approved.
Since an amendment to a policy approved by Senate is involved,
the revised calendar entry is now being submitted to Senate for
approval.
The revised calendar entry, together with the rationale for the
change, is given in Paper SUAB 4 (attached). The intent of the
change is not to raise or lower the admission standards, but to
use the actual grades awarded in calculating the average. The
change will affect a limited number of marginal students, and
for this reason, SUAB stated that during a transition period,
applicants would be given the benefit of either method. SUAB
approved the change unanimously.
If approved, the policy will be implemented to process applicants
to Fall Semester, 1971. It will be published in the new edition
of the Admissions Bulletin, which will be circulated to schools
in January, 1971.
MOTION:

SUAB 4 be approved.

SUAB 4
ADMENDMENT TO B.C. GRADE XII ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
At present, our admission requirements for students coming from
B.C.
Grade. XII are specified in terms of a percentage. The
vast majority of grades given in B.C. Grade XII are letter grades,
which we convert to a percentage in order to calculate an average.
I believe that it is preferable that a grade point average be
used as the basis of admission when letter grades predominate.
My reasons are as follows:--
1.
We are using the grade directly as assigned.
2.
The system would be comparable to the inter-
nal SFU system.
3.
Arguments that we had interpreted a letter
grade with a percentage different than that
actually obtained, would be eliminated.
MOTION:
" That the attached Calendar entry be submitted
to Senate for approval.
Dr. D. Mekin,
Director of Admissions.
