MEMORANDUM
SENATE
?
From
STUDENT... SENATOR..................................................................
RETROACTIVE CREDIT FOR ONTARIO
Subject ........ GRADE XIII STUDENTS ... ADMITTED...IN
?
Date..... .AUGUST ... 2.7 ...... 19.7.O...................................................................
FALL 1968, SPRING AND SUMMER 1969
It is recommended that Senate consider at this time the motion below for
the following reason. Normally, a motion of this nature would be presented
by the Senate Undergraduate Admissions Board which has yet to function in its
reconstituted form. It is necessary that Senate forego this procedure as
many of the students in question are entering third, fourth or fifth semesters
and require credit for these courses to complete their lower level requirements.
This does not involve a change in admissions policy or intent therein.
It does allow award of credit to a group of students (those admitted to Fall
1968, Spring and Summer 1969) who have previously been denied. Credit was
awarded for Ontario Grade XIII prior to Fall 1968, and again since Fall 1969.
The decision to discontinue the award of credit for Ontario Grade XIII in
Fall 1968 was based on recommendations received from many Departments after a
study of the curricula. Subsequent implementation of the Ellis Report by
Senate has superceded this.
The implications of accepting this motion as it stands would be primarily
clerical, involving only the processing of applications. For example, 238
were admitted from
?
Grade XIII in 1968, and it is unlikely that the
majority of these would be from Ontario.
Senate is asked to approve the following motion:
"That Ontario Grade XIII students who were admitted without transfer
credit to Fall 1968, Spring and Summer 1969, and who fulfil the
admission requirements as specified in the 1970-71 University
Calendar, be granted credit according to current practices.
In those subjects where assigned transfer credit is given, double
credit will not be allowed when the work has subsequently been
repeated at SFU.
In any subject where unassigned subject credit is given, transfer
credit will not be awarded if the student has taken six or more hours
at the 100 level in that subject at SFU. If a student has taken less
than six hours in that subject at SFU, he will be awarded credit to
make his 100 level in that subject, including Grade XIII, up to six
hours.
Application by a student for retroactive consideration of transfer
credit may only be made once. This will automatically ensure a
complete review of the applicant's record.
Applications will be permitted up to January 31, 1971.t

Attached are four proposals which have been reviewed by the
Academic Planning Committee. Three of the four, the Archaeological
Studies Program, the Computing Science Program and the Arts Program
• are being circulated to you now although they will not be considered
until the October meeting of Senate. The fourth, the modified
Summer Semester Program will, if Senators have had sufficient time to
review it, be considered at the September Senate meeting.
