At a meeting of the Senate Agenda Committee held on
Wednesday, June 24, 1970, the Committee recommended:
1.
That Senate adopt the Terms of Reference submitted
by the Senate Committee on Examination and Grading
Practices as outlined in this paper; and
2.
That the Chairman of the Senate Committee on
Examination and Grading Practices, Dr. L. Boland,
be present at the Senate meeting of July 6, 1970
to speak to the paper.

1.
To recommend to Senate grading and examination practices
which are designed to ensure reasonable e(Jultal)ility in
(a) the assignment of grades within courses and across
courses, (b) the use of grades, and to ensure the internal
and external credibility of grades given at Simon Fraser
University.
2.
To keep in review the gradings assigned in order to
identify significant discrepancies in such grades, to
bring these to the attention of Senate, the faculties,
and departments concerned with a View to reducinB wide
divergences in future.
3.
To recommend to Senate appropriate methods for equating
grades so that summary measures of scholastic standing
utilized are equitable for students, for such purposes
as awarding scholarships on the basis of academic merit.
4.
To recommend to Senate appropriate implementation proced-
ures for policies approved by Senate.

The Committee will not attempt to make decisions in the case
of individual grades assigned any student, but may consider
information derived therefrom in developing appropriate
policies for recommendation to Senate to correct major in-
equities in future.
