The Psychology Department proposes to add the following course to
.the graduate course offerings in the department and would like to offer it
for the first
time
in the summer term 1970: 725 Proseminar in Cognition.
This would be an elective rather than a required course and would be
assigned to the Group C block of graduate proseminars as listed on page
2 of the recent calendar submission.
The Graduate Program of the Psychology Department, recently passed
by Senate, states that proseminars other than those already listed may
be offered when warranted by student and faculty interest. Graduate
students in the department, recognizing the growing importance of the
area of cognition, have long been asking for a graduate course in
cognition and the department has been eager to present such a course.
This is a rapidly developing area which cuts across a number of more
traditional areas and is currently of great interest in Psychology.
A course and a seminar in cognitive processes are presently offered on
the undergraduate level, but until recently there were no members of
faculty sufficiently involved in the area to teach it on the graduate
level. Thus, because there was no one available to teach it at that
time, the department refrained from listing a proseminar in this area
when the calendar submission was prepared over a year ago.
Now that Dr. Paul Bakan is joining the Psychology Department this
summer we have a well qualified person at the rank of full professor
who is exceedingly interested in teaching such a course. Dr. Bakan has
had considerable teaching and research experience in this general area
and could give an excellent graduate course in this important field,
Dr. Bakan would be available to teach this course during the
summer term 1970 and would like to do so then. He would not be available
again to teach this course until Spring term 1971 when many of the
students currently interested in this course would have graduated.
Thus, the department is most eager to offer this course this summer.
The offering of this course this summer would cause no additional
expenses to the Psychology Department or University as Dr. Bakan is
already committed to teaching during the sunmier term 1970 and is available
to teach this course. Furthermore, since a graduate proseminar. such as
thi6 primarily involves an intensive survey of the area, no special
equipicnt would be needed and the library resources presently available
would be sufficient.

2.
The calendar change necessitated by the addition of this course
would involve adding: 1) the phrase
"725-3
Cognition" to the courses
listed under Group C on page 2 of the recent calendar submission between
the courses numbered 715 and 700; 2) the phrase "725-3 Proseminar in
Cognition" to the Graduate Courses listed on page 4, between the courses
numbered 720 and 730.
The Psychology Department respectfully requests approval of this
graduate course in cognition to be offered first during the summer term
1970.
