MEMORANDUM
This is to advise that the Executive Committee, Senate
Committee on Graduate Studies, at its meeting held on March
18,
1970,
passed the following motion regarding the Graduate Calendar
submission from the Department of History:
"That the Graduate Calendar submission from
the Department of History be approved, including
the line on the top of the second page,
'896-5
Supervised Research Seminar' which leaves it
unspecified at present."
Note: The Executive Committee was acting on behalf of the full
Committee of the Senate Committee on Graduate Studies
under instructions from that Committee.

• M.A. PROGRAM
Genera]: Candidates for
the
M.A. degree must satisfy the minimum entrance
requirements set by
the University:
a degree
in
a discipline related to History
maybe accepted in some instances.
Since the graduate facilities of the department and the University may be limited
in certkin areas, the department will accept graduate students only when a qualified
supervisor is available and there are adequate library resources in the applicant's
field.
Progran of Study: All candidates for the M.A. degree are encouraged to enroll in
History, 800-5, Historiography; it is not, however, a required course.
A candi ate must satisfy the following minimum requirements:
1.
30 semester hours of work, of which 15 semester hours must be
in graduate courses (or research seminars) in the Department.
2.
The M.A. thesis carries a value of 10 semester hours.

After the student has been accepted by the Department, a Supervising
Committee will be.formed, composed of the student's supervisor and the Departmental
Graduate Studies Committee. The Committee, in consultation with the student, will
determine the student's program of study.

As soon as possible the student, in consultation with his departmental

supervsor, will select a provisional thesis topic. A Master's degree Examining
Committee will then be formed. It will be composed of the candidate's supervisor,
- : at least one other member of the Department, and an additional examiner from outside
the Department. This committee will approve the thesis topic, and will examine the
• candidte on his thesis and major field of study, ordinarily by means qf an oral
?
examination.
In unusual cir.:timstances,'and where the student's professional development
would benefit thereby, the Department may consent to the awarding of an H.A.. degree
based on course work alone. In place of the thesis, two additional courses will be
• taken, and three research papers will be submitted to the Examining Committee. These
papers will be bound as a thesis and deposited in the University Library. The Committee
will examine the candidate on his three research papers.
Language Requirements: The Department will require a reading knowledge of any
language relevant to the student's research. Students proposing to study Canadian
History must demonstrate an ability to read French.
The Departmentof Modern Languages offers courses to help Graduate Students
to Mee language requl,ements.

Progiam of Study:
East student shall have a faculty supervisor in the Departmut, who
in cnjunction with the student and. the Departmenta]. Cradunt.e Studies Committee,
shall determine the fields of study. Ordinarily, each student will do four fields
of study, three within the Department.
Thesis:
When a student has been formally admitted to Candidacy, an Examining
.Committee will be formed, composed of the student's supervisor, at least one other
member of the Department, and an external examiner. The student will, in consultation
withhis supervisor, select a thesis topic which will then he approved by the
Examining Committee. When the student has completed his thesis and is ready to
offe himself for the degree,
his
Committee will examine him on the subject of his
thess and in his major field of study. The approved thesis will be forwarded to
the rational Archives for microfilming, following which one copy of the thesis will
be bound and deposited in the University Library.
Language Requirements:
The language requirements will be dependent

of research and will be decided in consultation with his Examining Committee. Students
proposing to study Canadian History must demonstrate their ability to read French before
formal admission to candidacy is granted.
