Foundations Centre
As an alternative to the motions put forward by the Faculty of Education
regarding the recognition of Communication Studies as a department and the
rerganization of the Educational Foundations Centre, I wish to offer the
fo'lowing motion:
For a one year interim period:
a.
continued de facto departmental recognition of B.S.F., S.P.F., and
C.S.
b.
reorganization of the three divisions into an Educational Foundations
Centre with the following contraints:
i.
single undergraduate education committee
ii.
single graduate education committee
iii.
single tenure committee
iv.
a single spokesman for relations external to the Centre.
My reasons for this proposal are the following:
1.
Currently the Communication Studies Division contains four faculty members,
one of whom has submitted his resignation. The Social and Philosophical
Foundations Division currently contains six faculty members. Given the trimester
sytem, I do not believe that viable programs can be maintained in such small
departments unless the academic program is very carefully defined.
2. There is no definitive statement of the academic program or programs for
these three divisions. There is also no definitive statement of whether and how
the
,
Educational Foundations Centre and the Professional Development Centre will
relate to one another. In the absence of definitive statements on these two
subjects, it is impossible to identify the appropriate organizational structure.
3.
The formal status of these three divisions is confusing. Currently, the
three divisions have de facto standing as departments while the Centre has de
jute recognition from the Board of Governors. Therefore, to support the motions
for de jure recognition of three new departments is to move from an integrated
poition to one of decentralization. Without a more definitive academic
jutification than is currently available, I cannot support such a move.
