THE GENERAL STUDIES DEGREE
Recommendation
That requirement (c) "a minimum of 15 semester hour credits in
each of the general areas of humanities, social sciences, and
natural sciences," for the General Studies degree be dropped
(S.436 revised).
Reasons for the Recommendation
The intent of the requirement as stated in S.436 was to en-
courage students to broaden their exposure into all areas of
learning. Unfortunately, Departments had considerable diffi-
culty in separating their courses into the general areas of
Humanities, Social Science and Natural Science.
The Academic Planning Committee considered the following
alternatives:
(1) require 15 hours within the Faculty of Science, and 30
hours in Arts and/or Education
(ii) eliminate all area requirements.
The original intent in establishing the Bachelor of General
Studies degree was to provide an educational opportunity for
those students who are interested in obtaining a broad general
education without the currently required specialization in one
subject area. Given this intent, the Committee could reasonably
have recommended the first of the above alternatives.

In recommending the latter alternative, the Committee is cognizant
that opportunity will now exist for students to obtain degrees
reflecting either highly diversified or narrowly concentrated
courses of study. However, since adequate academic counselling
is now available either through the Dean of the Division of General
Studies or the University's Academic Advising Office, the Committee
favors eliminating the area requirements thereby placing on the
student responsibility for the development of an academic program
which meets his interests while at the same time reflecting the
University's intent in establishing the degree.

PAPERS S.71-130 THROUGH S.71-136
INCLUSIVE, CURRICULUM AND CALENDAR
CHANGES, FACULTY OF ARTS
For each of the above mentioned papers motions are
suggested to enable Senators to focus on salient points and
to provide a method for considering the large volume. Alter-
native motions and amendments would be in order if required
at the Senate meeting.
In those instances where it is clear that discon-
tinuance of a course is related to a new course, the entries
appear on the same line opposite each other (paired). In
general, the order of listing of the courses in the motions
corresponds to the order in which the first main mention of
the course appears in the general submission.
In a number of instances items in the general sub-
missions have been underlined by this office as an aid in
identifying proposals and the underlinings are not indicative
of any special emphasis to be attached thereto.
Editorial and other changes have been made by this
office where considered necessary. Further editorial changes
may be made, particularly in the submission concerning
Philosophy and the use of "level" as this could lead to
misunderstanding if sections were to be reproduced in the
calendar in the.present form.
