FROM: DR. B.G. WILSON, ACADEMIC
VICE-PRESIDENT AND CHAIRMAN
OF SENATE UNDERGRADUATE
ADMISSIONS BOARD
DATE: 17TH SEPTEMBER, 1971
TO: ALL MEMBERS OF SENATE
SUBJECT: AMENDMENT TO POLICIES
ON STANDING, CONTINUANCE
AND WITHDRAWAL
At the last meeting of the Senate Undergraduate Admissions Board,
the following motion was approved unanimously:--
"That paragraph (d) of the policy statement on
Continuance, Withdrawal and Readmission be amended
to read:
'A student on either academic warning or academic
probation must carry a minimum semester course
load of 12 semester hours and may not repeat
o11OS,1 ?
courses in which he has received a grade C minus
or better. He will not be permitted to register
in a course overload, (that is, he is restricted
to a maximum of 16 semester hours if registered
in the Lower Levels of the Faculty of Arts or
Education, or a maximum of 18 semester hours
if registered in the Faculty of Science or the
Upper Levels of the Faculty of Arts or Education)'."
(The new section is underlined).
Senate is now asked to approve the same motion.
Reasons for the Addition
At the end of each semester, the Senate Undergraduate Admissions
Board reviews the records of students with low levels of achieve-
ment. In recent semesters, the Board has been somewhat disturbed
by the number of students in serious academic difficulties, who
have been granted approval for an overload by the Dean of their
Faculty. This has generally resulted in the student not meeting
probation conditions and being required to withdraw from the Uni-
versity. It is the opinion of the Board that many of these
students could have succeeded if they had registered in a more
moderate load.
