for the General Studies Degree, as set forth in 

Paper S.71-97."

REVISION OF REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ? 

AUGUST 6, 1971 

GENERAL STUDIES DEGREE 

Recommendation 

That requirement (c) "a minimum of 15 semester hour credits in 

each of the general areas of humanties, social sciences, and 

natural sciences," for the General Studies degree be dropped 

(S.436 revised), and that "a minimum of 15 semester hours, at 

any level, within the Faculty of Science and at least 30 

semester hours, at any level, from within the Faculties of Arts 

and/or Education" be inserted. 

Reasons for the Recommendation

The intent of the requirement as stated in S.436 was to encourage 

students to broaden their exposure into all areas of learning. 

Unfortunately Departments, when asked to do so, have had consider- 

able difficulty in identifying and separating their courses into 

the general areas of Humanities, Social Science and Natural Science. 

In fact, in some departments, it was felt that a given course might, 

in different semesters, fit into any one of these categories de- 

pending on who was teaching it. For this reason it is felt that 

block designations by Faculties would be a more meaningful approach 

toward meeting the intent of the original motion.
