The attached course proposal for Math 800-4 - Pure
Mathematics, Selected Topics - was approved by the
Executive Committee of the Senate Graduate Studies
Committee at their meeting on August 16, 1971, and
is now being forwarded to Senate for approval.
If approved, the Executive Committee of the Senate

Graduate Studies Committee requests that Senate
suspend its rules with regard to the two semester
time lag requirement for the offering of new courses
in order that Math 800-4 may be first offered in
the 1972 Spring Semester.

A.
What is the detailed description of the course including differentiation
from lower level courses, from similar courses in the same department
and from courses in other departments in the University?
There are no comparable courses, at the graduate level, either within
the Department or in other departments of the University.

What is the range of topics that may be dealt with in the course?
The topics dealt with in this course may he chosen from any area
which is not already a part of the regular graduate course offerings
in pure mathematics.

A selected topics course in pure mathematics would introduce a
degree of flexibility to the pure mathematics graduate course
offerings which does not presently exist.

the Department to offer courses in subject areas of interest
to faculty and graduate students which are not a part of the
regular courses.
