Canadian Studies Prograimne faculty. Through the traditional disciplines of the
faculty of arts and education various interpretive approaches will be
utilized to examine the development and the associated problems of Canadian
society and culture.

JUSTIFICArION
A.
What is the detailed description of the course including
differentiation from lower level courses, from similar courses
in the same department, and from courses in other departments
in the University? The course is an interdisciplinary introudction to the
Canadian Studies Programme. It is meant to provide the student with an
integrated overview of Canadian society and culture in its broadest scope.
At the same time it will permit the student to see in some detail the way
in which each of the traditional
disciplines
deals with Canadian questions.
No similar course is offered at SFU.
B.
What is the range of topics that may be dealt with in the course?
The course is organized into 4 ?
3 week sections, in each of which distinct
subject matter - history, economics, english, geography - will be covered.

This approach will alternate periodically with discussion led by multi-
disciplinary panels of professors, in which the integral characteristics
of Canadian society and culture will be stressed.

The course is the

the student with an insight into the complexities of Canada and the ways
in which the various disciplines approach the problems of the area.

3. JUSTIFICArION
A.
What is the detailed description of the course including
differentiation from lower level courses, from similar courses
in the same department, and from courses in other departments
in the University?
Each semester members of the Canadian Studies faculty will choose a topic which
can be examined profitably from the perspective of two or more disciplines.
It will be a true inter-disciplinary seminar, in that it will be taught
co-operatively by specialists from these disciplines. No similar course
is offered at SFU.
B.
What is the range of topics that may be dealt with in the course?
The range of topics that may be dealt with in an interdisciplinary mode
include: One Prairie Province? A Question for Canada; The Quiet Revolution
in Quebec; The Silent Surrender of Canadian Industry; Regional Consciousness
and Canadian Identity, etc. This list could obviously be extended indef-
initely.

It will permit students to integrate topics and approaches which they
will have studied in discrete units within the traditional disciplines,
and will allow them to try and practice the interdisciplinary techniques
which have been developed by professional faculty in the Canadian Studies
Programme.
