?

Eight months after acceptance, or Spring 1972.
3. JUSTIFICATION
A. What is the detailed description of the course including
differentiation from lower level courses, from similar courses
in the same department, and from courses in other departments
in the University?
This course will concentrate upon the soil component of natural land-
scapes. At present there is no comparable course offered in the
university. A few introductory lectures on soils are normally given in
Geography 211 (Introduction to Physical Geography) but beyond this level,
soils have been treated only peripherally in Geography 315 (Biogeographv
an arrangement that has not proved satisfactory.
B.
What is the range of topics that may be dealt with in the
course?
Factors and processes of soil formation. Field and laboratory
• ?
techniques of soil description and analysis. Soil mapping and surveys.
Soil classification and the major orders of soils.

2.
0 ?
C. How does this course fit the goals of the department?
The Geography Department has, as one of its irImary goals, the
offering of an adequate undergraduate training in the three main
streams of Physical, Cultural and Economic Geography. The absence
of a course on soils has so far been a distinct deficiency in the
Physical Geography stream of the department.
D.
How does this course affect degree requirements?
Does not.
E.
What are the calendar changes necessary to reflect the
addition of this course?
Addition of course number and description.
F.
What course, if any, is being dropped from the calendar if
this course is approved?
None.
C. What is the nature of student demand for this course?
There is a substantial demand among undergraduate majors in this
department for a greater variety of courses in Physical Geography.
There is also a demand from Science students (particularly
those majoring in Biological Sciences) for such a course. These
two sources should provide an adequate enrollment for the course
if offered once annually.
H. Other reasons for introducing the course.
The acquisition by the Geography department of new laboratory
facilities in the Classroom Complex has made it feasible to offer
such a course.
