Date

Executive Committee, Senate
Committee on Graduate Studies
December 23, 1970.
I.
Economics 811-5 - Advanced Monetary Theor
The Department of Economics & Commerce, in order to achieve a principle
outlined below, recommended certain changes in course numbering and
addition of a new course, with references being made to Economics 810-5,
812-5 and 814-5. At a later stage in review by various committees, the
same principle was achieved without renumbering of other courses but
merely with introduction of one new course, Economics 811-5.
The Executive Committee of the Senate Committee on Graduate Studies
approved the course, Economics 811-5 - Advanced Monetary Theory - in
consultation with the Chairman of the Economics & Commerce Department to
achieve the principles desired, and recommends the course to Senate for
approval.
The Department of Economics & Commerce provided the following statement:-
Although the Department of Economics and Commerce offers a
Ph.D. field in Monetary Economics, there is at present only
one course (Economics 810-5) which serves to prepare a
student for the comprehensive examination in that field.
Students planning to take the comprehensive examination in
Monetary Economics find they must, in effect, do a "reading
course", in addition to Economics 810, in order to be
adequately prepared. It is usual, at this and at other
North American Universities, to offer at least two courses,
one semester in length, for each Ph.D. field.
Some idea of the extent of preparation necessary to prepare
a Ph.D. field in Monetary Economics, and therefore of the
necessity for at least two graduate Monetary courses, can be
obtained by perusal of the attached reading list.
This proposal would not change Department staff requirements.
II.
Economics 900-0 - Economics Research Works
The Faculty of Arts and the Executive Committee of the Senate Committee on
Graduate Studies approved the course, Economics 900-0 - Economics Research
Workshop - and recommends the course to Senate for approval.

The Department of Economics and Commerce — Graduate Studies Committee has
reviewed the calendar entry of the Graduate Program in Economics and would like
to recommend
the
addition of:
Economics 900-0 — Economics Research Workshop
? -
?
-
Calendar Description:
Methodological approaches to research: the selection, planning and
conduct of research. The critical evaluation of research reports
by
students, staff, and invited speakers. Students writing extended
essays, theses or dissertations and enrolled in Economics 898 or 899
are
encouraged to participate in this workshop.
Rationale: ?
.
Since we currently have a number of graduate students who are
in
the research stage of their programs, it i appropriate to consider
a more formal format for the direction of their research which would
make available to the Department
the
results of such research. The
relevant format may be that of a non-credit course which is actually
a research worksh
op
.
Such workshops have proved to be extremely useful at other uni-
versities. In fact, this last summer, the Department of Economics
and Commerce ran a workshop in Economic Development on an experimental
basis under the direction of Professor L. Currie. The experience was
entirely favorable.
This course would be offered regularly each year (during Summer
term
initially). It would.be
directed by one or more senior professors
whose
research ability is well established.
Department staff requirements would not
be
increased by the addition of this course. Staff utilization may
change slightly.
The Department Graduate Studies Committee will be meeting again Friday,
November 6, to consider one further revision to the Calendar. If approved,
this revision will
be forwarded to you immediately.
