COURSES IN THE DIVISION OF GENERAL STUDIES TO COUNT TOWARD REQUIREMENTS FOR
THE BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE
On page 85 of the current calendar, the Faculties and departments
and/or sections of Simon Fraser University have been divided into four groups
to assist in planning programs for students pursuing the B.A. degree. The
list as It stands in the current Calendar does not include General Studies,
African Middle Eastern Studies, Canadian Studies, Latin American Studies, or
Computing Science courses. In addition, Group 0 as it stands in the current
Calendar includes a listing of courses that were in the Faculty of Education
at the time of printing of the 72-73 Calendar. Courses entitled BSF, CC&A,
and Kines, were included as another unmarked group since at the time of the
?
• ?
printing of the 72-73 Calendar it was not determined in which Faculty or
division they would be included. This latter group of departments has now
been included in the Division of General Studies. The proposed changes,
then, for the 73-74 Calendar are to have Group D excusively for the Faculty
of Education, and to add a new Group E for the Division of General Studies.
At its meeting of September 28, 1972, the Faculty of Arts Curriculum Committee
discussed the matter of whether the Faculty of Arts should accept certain
General Studies courses in fulfilling the Faculty of Arts Group Requirements.
The Group Requirement is: "All students registered in the Faculty of Arts
must have at least 12 semester hours of the first 60 in each of the Faculty
of Arts Groups A and B as outlined on page 85 of the current calendar." It
was noted that in the lower levels (first 60 hours) there are no restrictions
on the number of credit courses taken outside the Faculty of Arts as electives,
and that a student could fulfill the Arts Group Requirement and lower division
pre-requisite requirement for a major in Arts, and still have from 24 to 36
hours of electives in courses outside the Arts Faculty in his lower levels.
It was recognized, however, that some courses in the Division of General
Studies (Group E) could definitely be classed as humanities subjects and others
as social sciences courses. It was the opinion of the ACC that certain of
these courses should be applicable to the appropriate Group A or Group B
requirements; however, the determination of the applicability of these courses
should be the responsibility of the ACC who would assess the courses each
semester and flag the courses as appropriate (or not appropriate) for the
Group A and/or Group B requirement. It is proposed that a list of approved
?
• ?
courses be regularly conveyed to the Academic Advice Center where authorization
for Group E subjects used in lieu of Group A and/or B up to a maximum of 6
hours will be given to the student In writing and recorded for reference when
the student's program is screened for graduation.
