The Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies has
approved a new course proposal, Kinesiology 366-3, as set
forth in SCUS 72-18, and recommends approval to Senate.
In the event that the Department wishes to offer
this course for the Spring semester 73-1, a waiver of the
normal two semester time lag requirement will be required.

on the storage and retrival of information in memory, decision making
processes and the control of movement.

JUSTIFICATION
A.
What is the detailed description of the course including differentiation
from lower level courses, from similar courses in the same
department: and from courses in other departments in the Universitu?
This course will address the problems of definition of the component process
which serve skilled performance and the characteristics of these processes
which place limits on performance. It duplicates no other course currently
offered by the University.
B.
What is the range of topics that may be dealt with in the course?
Attention and filtering
Memory - storage, retrival, encoding, rehearsal, models of memory
Signal detection - Statistical decision theory, vigilance
Information - A metric of performance
Decision Making - reaction time, information theory, speed-accuracy
trade-off, reaction time models
Multiple decisions - time sharing, psychological refractory period
Movement control - feedback and Fitts Law, attentional demands of movement
automation of movement, models of movement control.

Students in the department have the opportunity to study theory
and methods of anal

sis for the physiological and hiomec1anical
components of physical work. This course will complement those
functions by providing a basis for assessing the mental requirements
for skilled performance.

take Kines. 366 for credit.
