Additions
Background
The three area study programs within the Division of General
Studies were organized under the concept that they would each have a core
of interdisciplinary courses which would be required of all students enrolling
in them, but that the majority of courses would be drawn from existing
departmental
offerings, recommended by the appropriate Steering Committees
and approved by Senate.
Since all of these courses had previously been subjected to the
approval of Senate and its appropriate committees when approved as
departmental offerings, detailed descriptions of them were not required for
their inclusion within the area study programs. During the time since
initial programs were approved, the Steering Committees have recommended
that other courses be added to their approved lists. Some of these are new
courses that departments have added to their programs, some were merely
overlooked when the original lists were compiled. It seems superfluous that
the titles of these courses need be brought before Senate for a second time
when the task could be delegated to one of its operating committees. Therefore,
I recommend that Senate delegate to the Senate Committee on Undergraduate
Studies the authority to act on the recommendations of the area study steering
committees regarding the addition and/or remission of existing departmental
courses to their list of electives, and that further action by Senate not be
required.
