BACKGROUND STATEMENT
Senate Document S. 71-89, approved July 1971, established
a Minor Degree program in Africa/Middle East Studies under which
students are required to complete at least 23 semester hours ( 9 at the
lower levels and 14 at the upper levels). Of these 23 hours only one
of A/ME 401-5 or 402/5 is required. The remaining 18 hours may be
selected from any of the courses approved for inclusion by the A/ME
Steering Committee and ratified by Senate (this list of courses was approved
by Senate under S. 71-34 in February, 1971). Courses approved on the
list are those offered in departments which have either full or partial
content in Africa and/or the Middle East. The course under consideration
here, History 476-5 East Africa, was overlooked in the compilation of
the original list and we wish to add it at this time.
