PROPOSAL FOR

-
VW015
Transfer Credit and Bachelor of Science Degrees for,
Students Who Successfully Complete First Year
Medical Science Professional Training
I. ?
BACKGROUND
I
A.
Several students from the Faculty of Science at SFU
have been accepted into medical, dental or veterinary
medicine professional
,
schools prior to completing the
requirements for a bachelor's degree at Simon Fraser.
Since the competition for entry into these schools is
so intense that a very large majority of new admissions
already possess a degree, only exceptional students are
accepted prior to attaining a Bachelor's degree. There-
fore, these students are usually superior undergraduate
students who would qualify high on the list for degrees
were they to complete their programme at SF0.
B.
Many Canadian and American universities award Bachelor's
degrees to students following their successful completion
of the first year of professional medical studies.
Examples taken from current university calendars follow.
Canada
1) UBC
p.
261
Combined B.Sc. Degree and M.D. or D.M.D. Degree
Program:
Students who have completed the third year in the
Faculty of Science at U.B.C. and the first year in the
Faculty of Medicine or the Faculty of Dentistry also at
U.B.C., and who have completed all the course requirements
for the B.Sc. degree, including up to 15 units or course
work in the Faculty of Medicine or the Faculty of
Dentistry recognized for credit in the Faculty of Science,
may on application and with the approval of the Dean of
Science receive the appropriate B.Sc. degree.

University of Victoria
p.
82 - 83
A student who has taken his first three years
at the University of Victoria may be granted a B.A.
or a B.Sc. after at least one year of a medical
programme provided that the courses he takes at the
medical school, when combined with those taken at the
University of Victoria, are deemed equivalent to those
which would be required at the University of Victoria
either for a general or a major B.A. or B.Sc.
?
Only
courses which do not overlap courses taken at the
University of Victoria and which are acceptable to the
appropriate department(s) will be accepted for credit.
The University shall receive assurance from the other
university that a Bachelor of,Arts or a Bachelor of
Science degree will not be granted for the same work.
A student must apply through the Registrar for?
Assessment by the dçpartment or departments concerned.
If a student contemplates a transfer to a medical
school after his third year and may wish to receive
credit toward a Bachelor's degree, he should consult
with the department concerned about choice of under-
graduate courses as early as possible.
A departmental recommendation for such a Bachelor's
degree will be made through the Faculty to the Senate.
3) McGill P. 28
B.A. and B.Sc. Degree for Students in Medicine and
Dentistry.
A student who has completed three years in the
programme leading to the B.A. or B.Sc. degree (with
not less than second class standing in the two last of
these three years) and two years in the Faculty of
Medicine or in that of Dentistry, may petition the
Faculty of Arts and Science to be awarded the appropriate
degree. Such an award is not automatic, and a petition
will not be entertained unless the candidate has satisfied
all the specific requirements of the appropriate programme,
up to the end of the Third year, and has maintained a
satisfactory standing in his two years in Medicine or in
Dentistry.
The student whose standing, up to the end of the.
Third year is such that, had it been maintained in the
Fourth year, he would have been entitled to receive
the appropriate degree with Distinction or with Great
Distinction, and whose record in the two years in
Medicine or in Dentistry shows an equivalent standing,
may petition to receive the appropriate degree with
Distinction or with Great Distinction.

4) Memorial University
p.

Where special circumstances warrant, the Committee
on Undergraduate Studies of the appropriate Faculty
Council may permit candidates to complete not more
than the last four courses or equivalent required for
the degree at another recognized University, provided
the course is approved by the appropriate Department.
U.S.A.

the requirements of his major department.

completion of a major during three additional quarters
in a number of departments of the College of Letters and
Science.

SENATE PAPERS
.
C.
It is noted that transfer credit policy at SFU allows
for a maximum of 60 semester hours of transfer credit,
and no more than 30 semester hours of transfer credit
after initial registration at SFU.
The policy and directions for application for such
credit are detailed on the cover page of the Registrar's
form R-ADM1-12/70M1 (attached).
D.
It is further noted that the Senate Undergraduate
Admissions Board decided not to allow transfer credit
at SFU for Law courses taken at other universities
since "universities with Law Faculties do not normally -
permit use of Law courses for credit to the B.A., B.Sc.,
or B.Ed. degrees". (Reference: Minutes of the Meeting
of the Senate Undergraduate Admissions Board, held on
Thursday, April 8, 1971, at 2:30 p.m. in the Red Room,
Faculty Lounge. Item 7, pp.2-3).
Reference to Item I, B,
pp.
1-6 of the current proposal
indicates that such a policy is not followed in regard
to professional medical science courses.
II. PROPOSAL

by

hours credit in a science degree program at SFU
are eligible to receive a Bachelor of Science
degree from SFU after successful completion of
the first year of a professional program in

provided that the courses taken in such a program
are acceptable for transfer credit in a majors
or honors B.Sc. degree program at SFU, and
constitute sufficient credit to bring the
student's total to 120 semester hours credit.
