This memo is to indicate the changes that this
Department wishes to make in its graduate calendar entry for next
year. ?
They are as follows:
1.
In the second paragraph of the section DEGREE REQUIREMENTS (page 138),
the following sentence should be deleted:
For certain programs, particularly in applied Mathematics, it will
be normal for a candidate to have to obtain at least 40 semester
hours of such credit.
The reason for this recommendation (which refers to the required
number of semester hours of credit for graduate courses) is to
• ?
align the Applied Mathematics graduate course requirements with
the course requirements for the other graduate programs in this
Department.
2.
LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS (page 139, paragraph three):
The following sentence should be deleted:
Students will normally be required to obtain language qualifications
in two approved languages other than English.
In place of the above sentence, the following paragraph should be
added:
Candidates for the Ph.D. degree will normally be required to
demonstrate proficiency in reading mathematical papers in either
French, German or Russian. 11 student may be required by his
Supervisory Committee to acquire proficiency in an additional
language, not necessarily French, German or Russian, which has
spec.i2elevancC for the student's program.
/This change '11 bring the language requirements for this Department
/ in line with those of the other Departments in the Faculty of Science.
