On the recommendation of the Faculty of Education, the Senate
Committee on Undergraduate Studies has approved the attached minor
program in Elementary School Physical Education, as set forth In SCUS
73-12, and forwards it to Senate for its consideration.
The submission contains the following information:
(a)
a description of the program; and
(b)
Calendar information.

It should be noted that this proposal is one of a number of minor
programs, emanating from the Faculty of Education and envisaged in the
reorganization of that Faculty undertaken in the Sumner of 1971. The
question of whether or not such a program constituted a new program
and would therefore have to be submitted to the Academic Planning
Committee before transmission to Senate was discussed in SCUS and
referred to the Chairman of Senate. His ruling was that, since the
submission of such minor programs had been envisaged in the reorganiza-
tion of the Faculty and that this program constituted, with one
exception which was designed principally as a supplement to an exist-
ing course, a rearrangement of existing courses to fulfil a specific
purpose, it would not have to be submitted to the Academic Planning
Committee but must be approved by Senate before it could go into
effect. The Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies therefore
submits this proposal to Senate for its approval.

4. Purpose: The Minor Program in Elementary School Physical
Education (previously known as "Special Emphasis in Elementary
School Physical Education" was initiated in 1966 as an experi-
ment for teachers at Simon Fraser University. This program was
designed to be one channel of special interest within the main
stream of the Professional Development Program for elementary
school teachers. Hence, our central purpose was, and still is,
to prepare qualifying classroom teachers with an additional and
special competence to teach physical education.

the Elementary School Physical Education Minor, However, it is strongly
recommended that a prospective student for this program complete at
least two of the following courses prior to enrolling in Education
401 and preferably during his lower levels:

6. Required Courses: The program has followed the three semester
Professional Development Program for all students with the following
modification. During Education 401 approximately twenty-four
students are selected as candidates for Minor Program,' Selection
is based upon the student's potential teaching ablity and his special
interest and competence in Physical Education, When these students
return to campus for Education 402 they participate in the general
sessions, curriculum seminars and workshops offered to all students.
In addition, each "Minor in Physical Education" student is required
to attend special emLnars and workshops in elementary school Physical
Education.
[Airing Education 405 "Physical Education Minor" students are assigned
to classroom teachers who have a special interest in Physical Education.
Generally speaking, these students teach in a typical classroom and,
in addition, are normally assigned six to ten Physical Education classes
per week covering all age levels in the elementary school. It is
during this in-school experience that the University specialists in
Physical Education work very closely with the student and supervising
teacher,

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION MINOR
The Minor Program in Elementary School Physical Education
was designed to be one channel of special interest within
the mainstream of the Professional Development Program for
elementary school teachers. Hence the central purpose of
this Minor is to prepare qualifying classroom teachers with
an additional and special competence to teach physical ed-
ucation.
The Minor Program follows the three-semester Professional
Development Program for all students, with the following
modification. During Education 401 of the Fall semester
only, (two months in schools) approximately twenty-four
students are selected as candidates for a Minor Program.
Selection is based upon the student's potential teaching
ability and his special interest and competence in Physical

ion 402 (two months on campus) they participate in the gen-
eral sessions, curriculum seminars and workshops offered to
all students. In addition, each "Minor in Physical Educat.-
jon" student is required to attend special seminars and work-
shops in elementary school Physical Education. During Educ-
ation 405 (four months in schools) "Physical Education Minor"
students are assigned to classroom teachers who have a
special interest in Physical Education. Generally speaking
these students teach in a typical classroom and, in addition,
are zormally assigned six to ten Physical Education classes
per week covering all age levels in the elementary school.
