DATE:

MARCH, 1973
SUBJECT: TRANSFER CREDIT FOR SPECIAL ENTRY
AND MATURE STUDENTS
When Senate approved new admissions and transfer credit
policies resulting from the Ellis Report in 1969, the
following statements in regard to transfer credit were
included:--
(i) Transfer credit will be awarded for all
• acceptable passed courses if the average
on all passed courses is 60% (C) or
• ? better. ?
0
(ii)
No transfer credit will be awarded if the
average on all courses undertaken is less
..than60% (C). ?
At that time, statement (ii) had no real impact, since
?
0
?
there was' only0 one provision for admitting students 'with
less
than a' C average, and that was one which involved
relatively few students.
Since that time, the number of such students admitted
has increased substantially by the following routes:--
- through the greatly increased numbers of
?
0
Mature Students; ?
••
-
through S.U.A.B. granting the Director of'
Admissions authority to admit selected
unqualified students
as
Special Entries;
?
- through the Senate Appeals Board.

In dealing with these students, it soon became apparent
that many of them, although not technically qualified
for admission, had substantial quantities of work with
respectable grades mixed in with work with marginal or
failing grades. The Senate Appeals Board established.
the practice when admitting these students of granting
credit for. work which had been completed with a grade of
C or better. This practice was also adopted by the
Admissions Office for granting credit
to
Mature Students
and Special Entry students. The practice is logical and
works well. It appears time that it becamepart of the
formal policy. Since the practice is already being
followed, no implementation date is required.
MOTION
That the policy statement,
to No transfer credit will be awarded if the
average on all courses undertaken is less
than 60% (C)
be replaced by the statement,
"
When a student tith
an average of less
than 60% (C) on all courses undertaken
is admitted under one of the special
provisions, . transfer credit will .be
awarded for all courses passed with a
grade of 60% (C) or higher. "
