The Latin American Studies Steering Committee has recommended
that the following changes in their program requirements be introduced
into the 1973-74 calendar. I endorse their recommendations and forward
them to SCUS for its consideration.

Rationale: After the experience of 1 years of operation the committee
feels that the original requirements of three language courses
was unnecessarily stringent upon students wishing to pursue the
program. The feeling is that the reduction in competence in the
language will be outweighed by an increase in substantive
knowledge obtained through exposure to one of the "content"
courses.

Rationale: formally students could use only one of LAS 402-5, 403-5, or
404-5 toward the satisfaction of the Upper Division requirements for the
degree, but because the content of the seminars vary the committee
feels that there is no logical reason for excluding a student from
using any of them in satisfaction of the program requirements.
However, because there are only 14 hours required from the upper
division and because we recognize the need for exposure to the
disciplines, we feel that two courses from the LAS offerings is appro-
priate.
