Rationale for Motion #1 re Prerequisites
The faculty of Education has resources for a limited range of functions,
among which teacher education has top priority. The majority
1
of the Upper
Division Education courses are designed for teachers or prospective teachers ie:
persons who have completed EDUC. 401 and 402 or equivalent.
The statement that the Prerequisite EDUC. 401/402 is recommended has proven
to be misleading. Many persons, including some who have not completed their Lower
Division requirements, and some who have no intention of teaching, apply to register
in Upper Division Education courses. The indefinite "recommended" prerequisite makes for
unnecessary difficulty in advising students.
Since, for good reason a Prerequisite may be waived, it is proposed that the
Prerequisite for the courses listed below be changed.

The Faculty of Education passed the following motion:
that for EI)UC. 431, 435, 437, 441 and 442 where the stated Prerequisite
is EtXJC. 401/402 Reccxnnded, the Prerequisite be changed to :-
Prerequisite: not less than 60 semester hours credit.

Rationale for Motion #2 re Prerequisites
The five
courses, EDUC.
431, 435, 437, 441
and
442
are designed to develop
understanding of educational problems and issues generally rather than in the specific
context of teacher education programs. For this reason, the courses should be
made available to students fran the general University Conoitunity.
The Prerequisite of "not less than 60 semester hours credit" has the effect
of opening a course to any upper level students with an interest in education.
