This is to explain and clarify some minor substantive changes that we are
requesting in our forthcoming calendar entry for 1974-75.
(1) First, we seek several additions to our list of approved courses
which may receive credit for the Latin American Studies Minor. Those
courses, in general, reflect incorporation of new curricula of several
departments into the Latin American Studies Program. To summarize the
specific new additions (and assuming that the new and revised courses
will be approved):

A second matter which might be construed as more than an editorial change
is the removal of the prerequisite (LAS 200 or an upper. levels, course with
full Latin American content) for the 400 level courses in Latin American
Studies. The new calendar entry reads: "recommended preparation-' LAS 200".
The feeling of the Latin American Studies Steering Committee is that
students interested and qualified to participate in the upper levels
interdisciplinary seminar should not necessarily have to have taken previous
work in Latin American area studies. On the other hand, students working
for a minor in the program must take LAS 200 in any case and for them
therefore, the prerequiste is meaningless and redundant.
(3)
All other changes in the opinion of the Latin American Studies Steering
Committee are editorial in nature.
