MEMORANDUM
From
SENATE COMMITTEE ON UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES
Date
NOVEMBER 12. 1974
CHANGE IN COURSE DESCRIPTION AND IN
MOTION 1:
?
"That Senate approve - and recommend approval
to the board - the new course proposal, as set
forth in s.74-145, for
PSYC 444-5 - Psychopathology
MOTION 2:
?
"That Senate approve the proposed change, as set
forth in S.74-145,
(i)
in description for PSYC 451-5 Psychology of Infancy,
and
(ii)
in wording of the regulation for admission to upper
level seminars,
From: A minimum of 5th
level
standing is required
for admission. Admission to any upper level
seminar requires permission of the instructor
To: A minimum of 60 semester hours credit is required
for admission. Additionally, admission to any
upper level seminar requires permission of the
instructor."

At its meeting of 5th November, 1974 the Senate Committee
on Undergraduate Studies discussed the attached proposals from the
Department of Psychology.
In the case of the new course proposal, PSYC.444-5:
Psychopathology, the Dean of Arts responded to a question about
the relationship of this course to any new departures in the area
of Clinical
'
Psychology by saying that, while there were on-going
discussions in the Department about establishing a program In this
field, this course was being introduced independently of any such
proposal as a supplement to a similar course at a lower level. It
was also noted that, should any proposal for a program in Clinical
Psychology be brought forward in the future, it would have to be
reviewed, not only by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies,
but also by the Academic Planning Committee.
In discussing the second proposal to eliminate the. course
description from PSYC 451-5: Psychology of Infancy, it was noted
that the Department felt that the course title was sufficient
description of the course and that, in suggesting this change, the
Department was bringing this course into line with its other upper
level seminars. ?
When doubts were expressed about this practice,
the Dean of Arts agreed to bring the question of including course
descriptions in the Calendar to the attention of the Faculty of
Arts Curriculum Committee, with the suggestion that it be discussed
with the Psychology Department.
During the discussion of the proposed Calendar change,
it was confirmed that the wording proposed was a general statement
relating to all upper level Psychology seminars.
These proposals are now forwarded to Senate with the
Committee's recommendation that they be approved.

Rationale: Across the University there has been confusion
S ?
as to whether "5th level standing" means entry to the 5th

of the 5th level. The wording change
brings it into parallel with similar clauses in other
sections of the
calendar.
