See Appendix D.
a
Rationale:
Since the calendar changes of 1973-74 it has become
evident that students beginning French at 100-101-
201 etc. are forced to drop FREN 201 because they
do not have sufficient preparation. These students
a

2
should, therefore, be allowed to take FREN 100,
• ?
101, 151 before taking 201 etc.. On the other
hand, since there is an ever increasing number of
complete beginners, it was decided to reserve
FREN 100 for complete beginners. An English
speaking student coming from high school and taking
French at Simon Fraser University could enter
into either FREN 100 or 101 or 151 or 201 according
to his competence.
No changes are needed for course challenge
regulations. FREN 100-101 are being dropped from
the Honors, Major and Minor Requirements as
FREN 101 can no longer be taken instead of FREN
151.

?
FREN 201
The department realizes that this change will
add another course to the program of many students.
However, this is preferable to the present situ-
ation where some students lack the preparation
for FREN 201.

to "FREN 202-3 or permission of the course chair-
man. Students with limited experience in writing
compositions in French are advised to take FREN
206-3 before undertaking FREN 301-3."
See Appendix E.
Rationale:
The department has found that some students en-
rolling in French 301-3 do not have adequate pre-
paration to complete FREN 301-3 successfully.
FREN 206-3 will provide background for those
whose experience in writing compositions is
slight.

Change in Prerequisites: From " "FREN 405-5

to "FREN 405-5 highly recommended. Should be
taken during the last semester of linguistic

Rationale:

This is an advanced course which

should only be
undertaken by students with a wide background in
Linguistics.
See Appendix F.
p.
130 FREN 421-3 Change in Prerequisites: Add "FREN 403-5 and/or

Change in Prerequisites: Add "FREN 421-3 is

Prerequisite Change: From "FREN 202-3"

This change will allow flexibility in those cases
where the student has a knowledge of French but
not the specific prerequisites.

German
Course Requirements
For a
degree in German, a student
will be required to follow a program
approved by the Division, including the following:
Lower Division Courses:
Honors and Major: GERM 100, 101, 201, 202, 240/241
or
?
GERM 100, 101, 201, 202 and LING 130/221
Minor:
?
GERM 100, 101,201, 202
To
be taken in the Upper
Levels:
Honors: 50 units of German and Linguistics 300/400 series
• ?
Major: 30 units of German and Linguistics 300/400 series
?
Minor: GERM 300
or
301
or
302 and at least 12 hours of 400
division courses in German.
In addition, the Honors student will be expected to acquire a proficiency (i.e.
the equivalent
of
two semesters) in a second language other than English and
the langiagc of
his honors program.
to "For a degree in German, the following courses
(or exemptions from them) are required.
Lower Division Courses:
Honors and Major: GERM 102 (formerly GERM 100),
103 (formerly GERM 101), 201, 202, 240 and 241
or GERM 102 (formerly GERM 100), 103 (formerly
GERM 101), 201, 202, LING 130 and 221.
Minor: GERM 102(formerly GERM 100), 103 (formerly
GERM 101), 201, 202.
To be taken in Upper Levels:
Honors: 50 units of German, 300 and 400 series
(9 of which may be taken from the 400 series in
the Linguistics Division).
Major: 30 units of German 300 and 400 series (3
of which may be taken from the 300 and 40
.
0 series
in the Linguistics Division).
Minor: GERM 300 or 301 or 302 and at least 12
hours of 400 division courses in German.
In addition, the Honors student will be expected
to acquire a proficiency (i.e. the equivalent of
two semesters) in a second language other than
(_.
?
English and the language of his honors program."

a
I
Rationale: Students may now take a major or a
minor in Linguistics. The German Division wishes
to insure that the majority of the courses in the
major are in German rather than in Linguistics.

GERM ?
Change of Course Number and Credits: From
101-3 ?
"GERM 101-3" to, "GERM 103-4."
See Appendix L.
Rational
Justification for request to raise credit value
of German 100-level courses: At present there
exists an obvious disparity 'between contact
hours of the intensive German language program
at the 100-level and the number of credits
given (5 contact hours plus recommended prac-
tice time of 2 hours per week in the language
lab for 3 credit units).
Two years ago, the German Division reduced the
credits from 4 to 3. This was done not for
language-pedagogical but for administrative
reasons. ?
It has since become clear to us that
this change has created, rather than resolved,
problems.
At that time, Spanish (like German) kept the
same number of contact hours, but (unlike German)
kept the same number of credits; whereas Russian
(unlike German) reduced the number of contact
hours, when (like German) they reduced the number
of credits. For some reason, German got the
worst of both alternatives and we wish to correct
that situation.

to "Continuation of the work of GERM 102-4
(formerly 100-3); it should be taken, whever possible,
in the semester immediately following GERM 102-4 (or
GERM 100-3).
Change in Prereguistes: From "Prerequisite:
GERM 100-3 (formerly 102-4), or consent of instructor."
to "Prerequisite

main trends in the development of German drama
from 1818 to 1885."
to "A study of main trends in the development of
German drama."
See Appendix M.
• ?
Rationale:
The title already gives the nineteenth century
for the period to be examined and we did not want
to impose our restriction (1818-1885) on top of
another nineteenth century.
