At its meeting of Monday, March 4, 1974, Senate passed the
following motion:
"That the determination of the appropriate relation-
ship between credit and contact hours rest with
departmental undergraduate curriculum committees
subject to the approval of Faculty Curriculum
Committees, the Senate Committee on Undergraduate
Studies and Senate."
In the discussion of this motion I. Mugridge pointed out that
this motion referred to the initial proposal of courses.
Perusal of the Calendar indicates a considerable variation
.
?
of number of credits offered in different courses at S.F.U. with no
constant relationship between vector numbers and course credits. As
Senate in a subsequent motion at the March 4 meeting voted to eliminate
vector hours from the Calendar, there appears to be no constant method
whereby faculty or students can assess the relationship between credit
and contact hours in the various faculties and departments.
In order to draw attention to the variation in the credit/
contact hour relationship in the various courses offered at S.F.U.
I wish to bring the following motions to the next meeting of Senate:
1)
Senate requires departmental undergraduate curriculum
committees to provide to the Academic Vice-President, or
his designate, prior to the October meeting of Senate,
for transmission to Senate prior to its first meeting
in
1975, brief written statements of departmental policies
on the relationship between credit and contact hours in
all regularly scheduled undergraduate courses.
2)
The Academic Vice-President, or his designate, report
back to Senate prior to its first meeting in 1975 on the range
of such policies as described in the previous motion and on
the variations in the ratios of credit to contact hours
in all regularly scheduled undergraduate courses, and make
recommendations to Senate in
1
it of this information.
