BACKGROUND
AND RATIONALE
British Columbia Institute of echnology offers two-year
diplomas in 26 different teclyologies. The program for
each
technology is rigidly defin^d,
although some of the technolo
g
ies,
have some .program options -
eg: a Market
Option and a Traffic
Option In the Marketing M. nagement Technology. A complete list
of the technologies is given in Appendix A.
Although the emphasis at B.C.I.T. Is quite different from
University, being
much
more vocationally oriented, it is clear
from even a superficial inspection of the
programs that many of
them contain ?
to material Included in dcree
programs at S.F.U. In fi
— p.ast, the
Course Challenge
mechanism
has been relied on to grant credit for work
at 13.C.l.T. This
paper recommends a.direct transfer arrangement.
It should be noted that this Is the third departure from the
principle tlat only work designed as part of a degree program
be granted transfer credit, the others being
work at
Colleges
of Education, and
the Diplomas offered by some British universities.

That Snrtt-e authorize the Director of Admissions
to grant transfer credit for work completed at the.
British Columbia 1nstitute of Technology.
?
'I
The Senate Undergraduate Admissions Board has inst:ructed
the Director of Admissions, subject to approval of the
abovementioned motion by Senate, to negotiate with
appropriate depar tmonts at S.F. U. and, if neceary,
, with
B.C.I.T. , to estab1ih a schedule of transfer credit. The
study is to be completed by March 30th, 1974, so that
transfer applicants for Fall Semester, 1974, may be consider-.
ed for
credit.
S. ?
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
The motion is put forward as a simple enabling motion to
enable the dotailed studies necessary to establish a schedule
of transfer credit to get under way as rapidly ns.possible.
WI th the instructions given to the Director of Admissions: by
the Board, each of the academic departments concerned will be
involved in the evaluation process. This will Involve mainly.
the Departments of
,
Economics and COmmerce, Computing Science,
Mathematics, Biosciences, Chemistry, Physics and Communications
Studi.
Although U.B.C. only grants transfer credit on a very selective
basis, and the University of Victoria does not grnnt any credit,
it appears (see correspondence in Appendix B) that both these
institutions are ready t take a more liberal approach. 13.C.I .T;
has also negotiated a transfer arrangement for business courses
with the University of Alberta.
