August,
The last report of the Senate Committee on Undergraduate
Studies was placed before the Senate meeting of July, 1974. Because,
at that time, Senate was beginning to require formal reports from its
Committees, an activity which had not been undertaken up to that point,
that report dealt with the period between the establishment of the
Committee in March, 1971 and June, 1974. The first two sections of
this report dealt with the establishment, terms of reference and
operating procedures of the Committee and with its membership. Some
changes have taken place in the membership of the Committee; but there
are no other developments to report in either of these two categries.
They are therefore omitted, except for the attachment of a list of the
current members of the Committee (attachment I).
1. Actions taken under the terms of reference.
A. To consider and make recommendations to Senate on all exist-
ing and proposed courses taking into consideration:
i.
the Universities academic standards; and
ii.
the need for coordination of all undergraduate
activities within the University.
The Committee indicated in its last report that the major
part of its time had been spent fulfilling this part of its charge.
This, as is probably inevitable, has once again been the case and,
during the last year, the Committee has brought to Senate a total of
49 papers dealing with various aspects of curriculum and course develop-
ment in a number of University departments. These have included major
curriculum overhauls in the Department of Communication Studies) the
Department of English, the Department of History and the Department of
Geography. ?
Most of the other papers submitted have dealt with the
introduction of new courses, although some larger programs, such as
the introduction of a B.A. degree in Mathematics and of a joint
degree in Philosophy, Linguistics and Psychology, have also been
considered.
B. To review the results of current evaluation processes and
bring significant discrepancies to the attention of Senate,
the Faculties and the Departments concerned.
C. To recommend to Senate grading and examination practices

1. reasonably consistent and equitable evaluation?
practices within and across courses; and.
ii. continued maintenance of high academic standards.
During the Fall semester, 1974, the Committee once ag.in
took up a number of the questions mentioned in the last report. In
particular, attention was directed towards the various reports on
grading which the Committee had received and, related to this, the
question of course withdrawal. Since that time, a great deal of
discussion of these questions and of the Committee's draft reports
on them has been undertaken. It has not yet, however, been possible
to bring final recommendations on these problems to Senate. It is
nevertheless to be hoped that this will be achieved during the
coming year.
