MEMORANDUM
MOTION: ?
"That Senate approve the proposal for a new
Course Audit policy and regulations, as set
forth in S.75-104, as follows:
A student who has received written permission
of the Instructor may, following completion of
appropriate registration procedures, attend a
specific course as an auditor. A student who
has been given permission to audit a course
will not write the final examination nor be
given credit for the course. During the normal
S
?
course change period, a student may change audit
registration from one course to another or from
regular enrolment to course audit. However,
only those students who have been granted
regular admission (i.e. working towards a degree)
may change registration from audit to regular
enrolment. After the normal course change period
has ended, no further registration in course
audit will normally be permitted. Students who
have been placed on 'required to withdraw' or
T
permanent withdrawal' will not be allowed to
audit courses. For information on fees assessed
for course audit, refer to the fee section."

At its meeting of 22nd May, the Senate Under-
graduate Admissions Board considered the attached proposal to
revise the current policy on auditing of courses. In the
light of the comments from the Director of Admissions, the
initial proposal was amended to read as follows:
A student who has received written permission
of the Instructor may, following completion
of appropriate registration procedures, attend,
a specific course as an auditor.
?
A student
who has been given permission to audit a course
will not write the final examination nor be
given credit for the course. During the normal
S
?
course change period, a student may change
audit registration from one course to another
or from regular enrolment to course audit.
However, only those students who have been
granted regular admission (i.e. working towards
a degree) may change registration from audit
to regular enrolment. After the normal course
change period has ended, no further registration
in course audit will normally be permitted.
Students who have been placed on "required to
withdraw" or "permanent withdrawal" will not
be allowed to audit courses. For information on
fees assessed for course audit, refer to the
fees section.
During discussion of the proposal, it was emphasized
that students would still be required to go through the normal
admission and registration procedures but that the necessity for
academic documentation would be eliminated. The Director of
Admissions also noted that a new admissions category would be
created so that students would be admitted to the University
as auditing students only. Further, the records office would
establish a system for ?
identifying auditors so that a student
admitted to audit courses only and subsequently wishing to transfer
to a degree program would be required to apply for admission to
that program in the normal way.

The attached proposal for anew auditing policy is seen as a
positive move as it opens to the public the option of taking courses
for degree credit or as an auditor. Clarification of two items in
the attached proposal is necessary and therefore the following
amendments to the proposal policy are recommended:-
1.
"During the normal course change period a student may change
registration in the course audit from one course to another, or
from regular enrolment to course audit. However, only those
studarts who have been granted regular admission (i.e. working
toward a degree) may change registration for audit to regular

"Students who have been placed on 'required to withdraw' or
'permaneitt withdrawal' will not be allowed to audit courses."

Assistant Vice-President, Acadenil'
SubjccI.,
Policy
n Auditing of courses
?
.
Date ?
April .1975
The attached proposal for a change in the policy for
auditing of courses is submitted to the Senate Undergraduate
Admissions Board for its consideration.
Substantially, the proposal changes the existing
policy
in
one important respect. It would omit the requirement
that auditing students must be admissible to the University, thus
leaving open to any members of the public the possibility of
auditing a course,.provided'the
y
have permission of the instructor.
It should be noted that, if this proposal is accepted, audi.ting
students will continue to be registered in the normal way and will
continue to pay an auditing fee. It will also be required that
auditing students obtain the permission of the instructor teach-
ing the course they wish to audit so that instructors may control
the number of additional students attending their courses and, in
.
?
cases where auditing is inappropriate, can deny permission on these
grounds.
This proposal for change arises from a number of
considerations. The principal. of these is that the current policy
closes University courses to a number of people who, while
unwilling to undertake formal enrolment in one of the University's
programs and to pursue such a program towards a degree, nevertheless
have sufficient interest in attending one or more of our courses
for reasons other than obtaining credit. While this has never been
a problem of any real magnitude, it seems likely that it will arise
with greater frequency as the University expands its evening and
off-campus offerings. While these offerings are naturally
designed to cater primarily for students wishing to obtain credit
towards a degree, it would seem unreasonable to deny the opportunity
to attend them to members of the public who are either unwilling or
unable to obtain regular admission to the Unive ity.
