of the Universities Act, the Associate Vice-President, 

Academic hold membership on Senate, with such 

membership adding two to the Faculty members to be

members to be elected under Section 35(h)." 

(Explanatory Note: If the above is approved, election would be 

called for two faculty members to be elected 

by and from the faculty members jointly, and 

for one student member to be elected by and 

from the students at large.)

The Board of Governors has approved a proposed 

reorganization within the Office of the Vice-President, 

Academic creating the position of Associate Vice-President, 

Academic with major responsibility in academic personnel 

matters. I view this appointment as a very senior academic 

administrative appointment and recommend that Senate approve 

membership of the individual holding this office on Senate, 

as set out in the attached motion. 

In my view, an office with primary responsibility 

in academic personnel affairs must be clearly integrated 

with academic decision making within the University and 

Senate is the senior academic body in this regard.
