At its meeting of January 21, 1975, the Senate
Committee on Undergraduate Studies considered a recommendation made
through the Dean of Education on behalf of his Faculty and that of
Interdisciplinary Studies for further recognition of courses taken
in Education 404 prior to the Fall semester 1968.
The following motion was approved unanimously:
"That the present approved principle - that
courses undertaken during Education 404 and
normally credited towards an Arts degree or
towards a Science degree or towards a General
Studies degree may be credited toward such

degree - be extended by removal of the
restriction preventing recognition of courses
taken at Simon Fraser University prior to
1968-3."
It was made clear that the motion was to apply
the same recognition to courses undertaken in Education 404 before
the Fall 1968 as to courses taken since that time.

FACULTY OF EDUCATION
CREDIT FOR COURSES TAKEN IN EDUCATION
Subject. ?
404 PRIOR TO ... FALL ... SEMESTER.. 19.6.8 ..... ..... ........
.Date... JANUARY .1,9,. 19.75
. ... ... ........................... .... ... ..... ......
In 1965 when Simon Fraser University first commenced operations,
following recommendations to and negotiations with the Joint Board of
Teacher Education and the provincial Department of Education in respect
of proposed teacher education programs and teacher certification, the
Faculty of Education adopted the Professional Development Program of three
semesters embodying Education 401/402-15, Education 403-0 (now
Education 405-15), and Education 404-15.
Education 404 then consisted of courses primarily in Arts and/or
in Science and/or in Education, - with the addition in recent years bf
courses from Interdisciplinary Studies.
When the program was first introduced, and until the end of
Summer 1968-2, all of the work utilized by a student toward PDP comprising
S ?
Education 401/402, 403, 404 was restricted for credit only toward the
?
Professional Development Program and B.Ed. degree.
Following further discussions in 1968 with the Joint Board of
Teacher Education and the Department of Education arrangements were
completed for broadening the recognition of courses undertaken as part
of Education 404 and for conversion of Education 403-0 to Education
405-15. It was accepted that Education 401/402 and Education 405 (formerly
Education 403) would be restricted for credit toward PDP and the B.Ed.
degree only, whereas the individual courses undertaken in Education 404
could be applied also to the other degrees for which the courses would
normally be applicable.
Recommendations were made by the Faculty of Education to Senate
on this matter, and the cooperation of the Faculties of Arts and of
Science was sought. The Faculty of Arts approved "that these courses
which would normally fulfil the requirement for the B.A. degree, and which
are taken as part of Education 404 should be given credit toward the B.A.
degree," and the Faculty of Science approved "that those courses which
would normally fulfil the requirement for the B'.Sc. degree and which are
taken as part of Education 404 'should be given credit toward the B.Sc.
degree." Specifically there was Senate approval to permit any course
undertaken and credited as part of Education 404, provided it was taken
in or after the Fall Semester 1968-3, to be credited toward the degrees
in Arts and in Science as would normally apply. This principle has 'been
extended to the Bachelor of General Studies degree.
Current regulations stipulate that Education 401/402, Education
405 (formerly 403) may not be credited toward other than PDP and the
B.Ed. degree. Education 404 is credited toward PDP and the B.Ed. degree

and effective in and after 1968-3 courses taken during Education 404
and normally credited towards an Arts, General Studies or Science
degree may be credited toward that degree.
Since the introduction of the Bachelor Of General Studies
degree, which was designed to permit students a wide range of course
work with minimum restrictions, the Faculty of Education and the
Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies have given further consideration
to the restriction which is imposed by recognition of courses taken in
Education 404 since 1968-3 only. Both have approved recommendation
that this date restriction be removed. The operational date was applied
by the Faculties of Arts and of Science on Senate approval of the date
then recommended by the Faculty of Education but the principle of ap-
proving the usual recognition of courses was clearly established and
should not require further actions.
Earlier discussions were held with the provincial Department
of Education and the Teacher qualifications service to ensure that such
change would not be opposed and assurance was received.
The following motion is recommended:
MOTION: ?
That the present approved principle - that
.
?
normally credited towards an Arts degree or
courses undertaken during Education 404 and
towards a Science degree or towards a General
Studies degree may be credited toward such
degree - be extended by removal of the res-
triction preventing recognition of courses
taken at Simon Fraser University prior to
1968-3.
