The F.G.S.C. approved the following revision of the Chemistry Graduate Calendar
entry at the meeting of 27 September 1976. The following is the entire proposed
entry except for the list of Faculty and the description of courses. It replaces
the upper half of
p
148 in the current Calendar.

Degree Requirements
(a)
Course Work.
The minimum requirement for the Master's degree consists of 12 se

hours of graduate course credit. At least one course must he in
an area outside the candidate's field of specialization.
(b)
Cumulative Examination.
Prior to commencing his research the candidate must prepare a brief
dissertation which will emphasize the aim of his proposed research
and should include sufficient information to establish the significance
of the proposed work. This dissertation must be examined by the
supervisory committee before the end of the second semester of slt.idv.
(c)
Research.
Normally the major part of the Master's degree program will be deIi-
cated to original research. A thesis describing this research mut.

Decree Requirements
(a) Course Work.
The minimum coursp requirement for the Ph.D. degree consists of 20
semester hours qf graduate course work-beyond the Bachelor's degree;
at least two courses must be in an area outside the candidate's field
of specialization.
(b) Cumulative Examinations.
Ph.D. candidates will be required to

complete three
cumulative examinations to the satisfaction of the Supervisory Committee.
1.
Cumulative I: Prior to commencing his research the candidate
must prepare a brief dissertation which will emphasize the
aim of his proposed research and should include sufficient
information to establish the significance of the propoed work.
This first cumulative must be examined by the supervisory
committee before the end of the second semester of study.
2.
Cumulative II: An essay on a topic outside the candidte's
field of specialization. The presentation of the essayi will
occur in a group seminar no later than during the sixth semes-
ter of graduate study.
3.
Cumulative III: An original research proposal. The poposal
must represent a substantial departure from the thesispro-
ject. The defence of this proposal should occur no i1acr thm
the end of the ninth semester.
(c) Research
The major portion of the Ph.D. program will be devoted to original
research. A thesis embodying new and significant results tnus

presented and defended at the conclusion of the degree program.
(d) Language Requirement.

The F.G.S.C. also approved a change in the order of CHEM courses numbered 800
and above, as follows:
(Under heading, " Description of Graduate Chemistry Courses ", after600 level
entry;

and faculty availability:
