The Physics Department recommends that th

prerequisite courses for Physics 411-4 (C1assi9a1
Mechnics) be changed to read:
Math 232-3,
Phys 382-4; orpath 310-3, Math 312-4,
Phys 203-2, and Phys 205-2.
?
?
P-221 was discontinued some time ago, hende
an editorial change should be made so the pre-1
requisites for Phys 381-4 read:
Phys 202-2, 203-2, and 205-2.

After consultations with Billy Jones and R1cha'd Enns,
it became apparent to me that the effectiveness of Phys. 411
(Classical Mechanics) can be greatly enhanced If Phs. 382
or an equivalent course is made a prerequisite or at least
to be taken concurrently. If we want to do justice to
Phys.
1
111 as a 4th year course I think that this would be
a good move. At present, students can take this course
right after Phys.
203-2.
It is not, in my opinion, coridusive
to good teaching, if one has a great disparity among students
in terms of their initial state. I therefore request that
the undergraduate curriculum committee accept my proposal.

MEMORANDUM ?
F-76-19
The Physics Department recommends that the mathematics requirements for the
B.Sc.(Honours) degree in Physics be altered as follows (p.387 calendar):
Under levels 5,4,7 and 8 delete the present mathematics requirement and replace
with:
Math 312 - 4, 422 - 4 and two other mathematics courses numbered 316 or
greater. Mathematically oriented students should note that math 320 s either
prerequisite or highly
recommended for a number of upper level mathematics courses.
This change has been contemplated previously and has been hastened by the
proposed introduction of Math 242 as a prerequisite for Math 320. The new require-
ments introduce a little more much needed
flexibility
into the Physics honours
programme..
