• PROPOSAL FOR A DANCE MINOR
The Centre for the Arts, requests the approval of a minor program in
dance, effective September 1, 1977.
In the development paper A Credit Programme in the Arts, approved by Senate
in February 1976 (S. 76-21), dance, theatre, and film minors were outlined.
It was also stated that:
Integrated development need not entail simultaneous
introduction of all three minors. Given working approval
of the general shape of the programmes, the committee can
introduce further courses that contribute to that shape,
requesting formal certification of each minor as the struc-
ture of courses for it receives academic approval.
With the FPA. courses that have since been approved by Senate, and with
those we are putting forward simultaneously with this proposal, we are in
' ?
a position to request certification of the dance minor. The programme we
propose is exactly as set forth in S. 76-21, with one exception: we
suggest that an additional course not adumbrated in that paper be instituted
and made an option within the minor structure. This course is FPA. 384 -
Criticism of Performance; it would provide an alternative to FPA. 382 -
Aesthetics of Performance. We believe that this course has validity within
our overall structure of courses, and
intend
that it should have a place in
the theatre minor as well.
In our view the structure of the dance minor as set forth in the attached
"Proposed Calendar Entry" fulfills the central academic principle that has
guided the development of the minors as it was stated in S. 76-21:
The minor programmes should establish requirements balanced
between courses that emphasize the craft of the arts and
courses that emphasize the analytic understanding of them.
on the one hand, the minors should be directed toward giving
capable students a strong
introduction
to the practice of an
art form; on the other, each student should have significant
. ?
exposure to the traditions of the arts generally and the place
• ?
of that students's chosen art within tradition.

PROPOSED CALENDAR ENTRY
Requirements for a Minor in Dance
Dance minors will complete 21 hours of Lower Division credit, distributed
as follows:
Any 2 of:
FPA. 110-6 (formerly G.S. 110) The Arts in Context:
The Renaissance
FPA. 114-6 The Arts in Context: The Modernist Era
FPA. 116-6 The Arts in Context: North American Styles
or similar six credit "Arts in Context"
courses to be introduced in this series.
Plus all of:
FPA. 120-3 (formerly KIN 144) Aesthetic Forms of Human
Movement
FPA. 220-3 (formerly KIN 244) Contemporary Dance Technique
and Theory I
FPA. 221-3 Contemporary Dance Technique and Theory II
buted
Dance
as
minors
follows:
will also complete 17 hours of Upper
D
ivision credit, distri-
All of:
FPA. 320-3 Contemporary Dance Technique and Theory III
FPA. 324-3 (formerly KIN 344) Dance Composition
FPA. 326-3 (formerly KIN 310) Dance History
FPA. 424-5 Directed Study in Dance Performance
Plus one of:
FPA. 382-3 Aesthetics of Performance
FPA. 384-3 Criticism of Performance
Students who have taken any of these courses under earlier Kinesiology or
General Studies numbers will receive credit toward the minor. Some students
may find that their commitment to dance requires more continuous Studio
practice than is afforded by the required courses in dance. The attention
of such students is drawn to FPA. 425-5 and to the various non-credit dance
workshops offered by the Centre for the Arts. Workshops are announced prior
to each semester in which they are offered.

Resources for the Dance Minor
Faculty:
?
The two present full-time dance faculty, augmented by
sessional lecturers as at present, can teach the sequence
of dance courses now approved. We will continue to seek
visitors into the programme for limited terms and will con-
tinue to offer non-credit workshops on a limited basis.
We anticipate that for the time being those required courses
involving other disciplines can continue to be taught by
present faculty of the Centre or by faculty seconded from
elsewhere in the University.
Space: ?
With the authorization of funds to renovate the former
Day Care area of the Academic Quandrangle as a dance and
theatre movement area, sufficient space has been provided
for the regular sequence of dance courses.
Library:
?
current library resources are in our opinion adequate for
the
introduction of a dance minor of this nature. We anti-
cipate that the collection of works related to dance will
continue to grow at a moderate rate.
Other:
?
The approval of a minor will entail no significant addi-
tional expense in equipment or audio-visual materials. The
Only increase in staffing needed is the desirable but not
essential introduction of accompanists for advanced studio
work.
