Action taken by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies
at its meeting of May 18th, gives rise to the following motions:
MOTION 1
That Senate approve a change in the prerequisite statement
for Crim. 416- Current Issues in Criminology and Criminal Justice -
to read: "Reserved for Criminology majors, honors and minors. Others
admitted only on written permission of the Department".
NOTE
The motion conveys two changes requested by the Department:
First, the addition of students intending to minor in Criminology
to those previously eligible for the course; second, a change in
the source of permission from Instructor to Department.
,ArmTrvKT •)
That Senate approve and recommend approval to the Board
of Governors Crim. 417-3 and Crim. 418-3, Current Issues in
Criminology and Criminal Justice.
NOTE
The Criminology Department wishes to establish two more
"Current Issues" courses in order to avoid confusion when multiple
courses of the same type are mounted in a single semester. These
are special topics courses and as such will be treated in the
same way as special topics courses in other departments and faculties,
i.e. individual offerings will be approved by the Undergraduate
Curriculum Committee of the department in advance and subsequently
forwarded to Senate for ratification.

CRIM .416...'Current.. Issues. in
Criminology & Criminal Justice
The Department of Criminology is seeking approval to change the
calendar entry for the subject course in the following manner:
Under "Prerequisites", the calendar entry currently reads "Reserved
f'r criminology majors and honors; others ad

only on
written
permission of the instructor". The Departre.. wishes to amend this
to read: "Reserved for criminology majors, honors and minors. Others
admitted only on written permission of the Department".
The latter part of the change: "written permission of the Department"
should also apply to CRIM 417 and CRIM 418, the alternate course
numbers for 416, as the New Course Proposal Forms prepared for these
is
two courses currently read "written permission of the instructor".
Many of the students doing a minor in criminology have expressed
interest in taking CRM 416, and the Department of Criminology would
like to make the course available to them.
The Department would appreciate the Committee's approval of the above
changes.

Proposal Forms
The Department of Criminology is seeking approval for two new courses
proposal forms for which are attached.
The Department already offers a course entitled "Current Issues in
Criminology and Criminal Justice" (CRIM 416). However, if approved,
CRIM 417 and CRIM 418 will be used as alternate courses. This will
allow the Department to schedule a selected topics course three
semesters in a row, and will also allow us the flexibility to schedule
a selected topics course for the normal summer semester, the summer
session and the intersession.
As a further note, students will not be permitted to take a selected

Thecourse more than three times.
The Department of Criminology would appreciate the Committee's
approval of CRIM 417 and CRIM 418.
