The prerequisites for
CRIM
302-3 "Critical Approach to Crime and Deviance",
currently read as follows:
CRIM
101, 102, 103, 104 or 132.
Since as it stands now, the reading of the prerequisites
might
be
confusing, since some of the students
might
be under the impression that
CRIM
132 is an alternative to
the four courses previously listed, the
calendar entry should be changed to clarify this. The intent was that
students would take 101, 102, 103 and either 104 or 132.
To avoid the confusion, and in the light of the experience of past
semesters, the Departmental Undergraduate Curriculum Committee has
decided to remove CRIM 132 altogether, keeping the other four courses as
prerequisites. The reason why all four courses are considered essential
before taking CRIM
302 is as follows: CRIM 302 is a critique of tradi-
tional criminological theory and of the conventional approaches to the
problems of crime and punishment. It only seems reasonable that students
be familiar with these before being able to criticize them. This
traditional theory and conventional approaches are taught in the four
courses listed as prerequisites. In addition, all except CRIM 102 are
required courses for all Criminology majors.
