Action taken by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate
Studies at its meeting of November 8, 1977 gives rise to
the following motion:
MOTION
"That the proposed prerequisite changes
for CHEM 481-5 (Undergraduate Research),
CHEM 482-3 (Directed Study in Advanced Topics
of Chemistry) and CHEM 483-15 (Individual
Study Semester) , as set forth in S.77-15'
be approved and recommended to the Board
for approval.
Note - the statements added for CHEM 481 and 482 are'
not in fact new prerequisites but rather an attempt to place
previously approved requirements in the calendar so that
students will be fully informed. The proposed reduction
from 23 to 20 hours of upper division Chemistry as a
prerequisite to CHEM 483 is intended to facilitate
enrollment in CHEM 483 during the Summer Semester when no
other upper level Chemistry courses are offered.

Further Calendar Changes for 77178
.1
Date
October 11,1977
Chem 481-5:
?
Add: "Admission requires selection of a faculty supervisor
and submission of a preliminary research proposal to the
Department at least two months prior to the start of the
semester in which the course will be taken."
Chem 482-3:
?
Add: "Admission requires selection of a faculty super-
visor and submission of a research topic to the Department
at least one month prior to the start of the semester in
which the course will be taken."
Chem 483-15: Old Prerequisite: (1) Completion of 23 semester hours of
upper division Chemistry.....
New Prerequisite: (1) Completion of 20 semester hours of
upper division Chemistry.....
These above proposed changes were approved by the Department Undergraduate
Studies Committee (10/7/77) and the Department (10112177).
Rationale:
1.
?
Chem 481 and 482:
The proposed statements to be added to the prerequisites of Chem 481-
5 and 482-3 do not represent changes but simply spell out the present
Departmental regulations (see also the Calendar entry for Chem 483-15).
Chem 481: (March 24, 1971)
Undergraduate Research
Students should be asked to discuss the various topics of interest to
them with the faculty members during the semester prior to entering the
course. Students would be required to make a decision with regard to
topic and supervisor during that semester, and seek approval from the De-
partmert for entry into Chem 481.
Chem 482: (July 1972)
Directed Study in Advanced Topics in Chemistry
The candidate will select, and consult with, a supervisor (a member
of faculty) in his 6th or 7th semester, with a view to reading Chem 482-3
in the subsequent semester. Before the end of the 6th or 7th semester,
the candidate will submit to the Chairman of the Department a brief writ-
ten proposal of the proposed
content and reading references pertaining to
Chem 482-3.

IWO
Frequently students decide to enrol in one of these courses a few
days before the pre-registration deadline which leaves insufficient time
for the selection of a supervisor and preparation of a preliminary research
proposal. The proposed time limits of two months (481-5) and one month
(482-3) appear to be reasonable in view of the three-months period required
for Chem 483-15.
In summary, the proposed additions would facilitate counselling and
program planning
by giving the student more complete calendar information.
2. ?
Chem 483:
Individual Study Semester
The proposed reduction from 23 to 20 hours of upper-division Chemistry
has been approved by the DUSC on March 11, 1977 and by the Chemistry Depart-
ment on March 25, 1977. The change is to facilitate enrolment in Chem 483
during the summer semester (when no other upper-level Chem courses are
offered) between the student's 6th and 7th semester at which time he/she
has frequently not yet accumulated the formerly required 23 upper-division
credits.
