The following changes were approved by the DUGSC (April 15, 1977), the
Chemistry Department (July 13, 1977), and the Faculty of Science Under-
graduate Studies Committee (September 22, 1977).
1.
Chem 003, 004, 005: Replace: "Prerequisite: None. For Chemistry
Majors or Honors students, this course is available only as a
'free elective" by:
This course has no prerequisites and is available as an elective
for students from all Faculties.
2.
.Chem 104: Replace present course description by:
Atomic structure and chemical bonding; gases, liquids, solids and
solutions; chemistry of oxygen, hydrogen and other main group
• .
?
elements; the periodic table; basic electro-chemical cells.
3.
Chem 105: Replace present course description by:
Chemical equilibria; electrochemistry; chemical thermodynamics;
kinetics; transition metal chemistry.
4.
Chem 357: Replace present course description by:
Basic principles of infrared, ultraviolet, nuclear magnetic
resonance and mass spectroscopy as applied to the identification
of organic compounds.
5.
Chem 432: Delete:
Chem 437-2 will ordinarily be taken concurrently.
6.
Chem 437: Replace:
Co-requisite: Chem 432-3, by:
Prerequisite: Chem 332-3 and 336-2.
7.
Math Requirements for Chem Majors:
Math 151-3, 152-3, 253-4 and a minimum of 3 additional credits to
be chosen from Math 232-3, 302-3 (prerequisite: Math 101), 310-3,

312-4 or 316-3 (prerequisite: Math 232). Math 310-3 is highly
recommended.

8. Delete the paragraph entitled "Clinical Chemistry" (bottom of p.
375,
1977178 calendar).
Rationale for 1 to 6:
The new entries represent more concise descriptions of course
contents and prerequisites as presently offered. The purpose of the
change for Chem oox is to invite students from other Faculties. The
changes for Chem 432 and 437 are necessary since these two courses are
never offered concurrently.
Rationale for 7:
The 1977178 calendar lists the Math requirements for Chem Majors
as 151, 152, 253, and 310 or 316. Since the addition of Math 316 as an
alternative to Math 310 (Fall 1976), it has been pointed out that there
is no justification to single out this course as being more important to
Chem Majors than other upper-level Math courses (e.g., 302 or 312) or
Math 232 while Math 310, being a prerequisite for Chem 361 and a required
course in the Honors program, clearly deserves special emphasis.
.-
Rationale for 8:
The proposed Clinical Chemistry program has been rejected by the
University Council in July 1977.
