At a recent Kinesiology U.C.C. meeting it was decided
that this department would recommend changes in the
requirements for majors in Kinesiology. The current
calendar entry is ambiguous and no longer reflects
departmental policy with respect to special topics
courses. I should be grateful if this item could
be placed on the agenda for the next I.S.U.C.C.
meeting.

The change approved by S.C.U.S. at its last meeting was requested by the
Kinesiology Dept. for the following reasons:
(1)
The current calendar description is ambiguous. Students have misin-
terpreted the phrase "any one of: Kin. 420-3 ......' to mean that they
must complete one of those courses rather than that they may complete
only one of those courses.
(2)
In examining the wording because of problem (1) the department felt
that some allowance must be made for students who wish to take more
than one of these courses. It was felt particularly that the Kinesiology
Special Topics courses should be available to-majors for credit towards
their degrees. This is partly a reflection of a change in attitude to-
wards Special Topics courses. Rather than single presentations of topics
occurring because of faculty commitments they have frequently been used
to try "in the field" courses which are later made a part of regular
offerings. To deny a student credit towards a degree for taking such a
course was not felt to be equitable by the department.
