From
Senate Committee onUndergraduate

Date

Action taken by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate
Studies at its meeting of October 18, 1977 gives rise to
the following motion:
MOTION
"That the new course proposals for ITAL 100-3,
Introductory Italian I, and ITAL 101-3, Introductory
Italian II, as set forth in S. 77-126, be approved
and recommended to the Board of Governors
for approval."
?
Note - these courses were previously approved for
a one-time offering and were mounted
in
the Spring and Summer
semesters of 1977 respectively. ITAL 100-3 enrolled approx-
imately 30 students with 21 remaining in the course to the
end of the semester and ITAL 101-3 enrolled approximately
15 with 10 remaining throughout.
SCUS did not approve a waiver of the time lag requirement
and it is expected that, should the courses be approved, they
will be mounted late afternoon or evening in the Fall semester,
1978 and the Spring semester 1979.

STATEMENT REGARDING ITALIAN COURSE OFFERINGS
September 21, 1977
.
The two Italian courses which have been given on a temporary basis,
with the agreement of university authorities, have met with evident success
among our students. The enrolment figures, indicated below, show that we
had enough students to open two groups in Spring '77 and I must mention
that some students could not be admitted to the course because there were
already too many students in each group. The Summer course which was a
continuation of the Spring course shows a lower enrolment figure because
of the time of year. A more significant number of students would have
registered for Fall semester.
It is interesting to note that our initiative has received the best
possible support from the Italian community in Vancouver, particularly
from the Italian Consul General who provided us with teaching materials
and helped us find a Sessional Lecturer to teach the course. From my
previous discussions with the Italian Consul General, there is a possibility
that the Italian Consulate is willing to help finance this project and
assist the University to pay the teacher's salary. It has been clearly
stated that whatever financial help the Italian authorities would provide
us with, the selection and appointment of the teacher would remain our
responsibility.
I would also like to point out that during July 1977, Dr. Lincoln, who
was Acting Chairman of the Department at the time, spoke to Dean Blaney
and was advised that Continuing Studies would have no objection to financing
another offering of Italian 100 and 101 as long as the necessary approval
to offer Italian again was received from university authorities.
