Dear Dr. Jewett:
Thank you for your letter of May 11, 1977 communi-
cating the motions of the Senate and Board of Simon Fraser
University. It is clear that a majority of your Senators
are not aware that Universities received an increase of over
11 per cent, double the increase recorded in the provincial
budget. Many other ministries with valuable programs did
not fare as well.
I agree with your Senators that increases in student
. ?
fees should not be routine means of meeting budget shortfalls.
But rather than interpreting the Senate's message as a warning
to government, I suggest it is a reminder to those charged with
leadership in your University to bring costs of university
education within the ability of the province to earn revenue
and the student's ability to pay.
With the first quarter report in, provincial revenues
are not growing fast enough to warrant optimism that increases
in provincial grants will be very large
