MEMORANDUM
SENATE COMMITTEE ON UNDERGRADUATE ?
.From.
H. M. TANS, SECRETARY
STUDIES
SENATE COMMITTEE ON UNDERGRADUATE
STUDIES
Subject ..... KIN ...... 450-
?
INTERNSHIP
?
.Date... DECEMBER 9, 1976
The attached paper, under the title SCUS 76-37, was dis-
cussed at the SCUS meeting of October 26, 1976. Minutes of that
meeting indicated the following;
"Moved by R. Brown, seconded by L. Thomas,
'That the new course proposal for KIN 450-5
- Internship, as set forth in SCUS 76-37, be
approved and recommended to Senate for approval.'
J. Ellis, although supporting the proposal, was concerned
with the question of liability and the source of direction
. ?
and responsibility. He referred to agreements currently
used by institutions relative to nursing training. It was
agreed that the Chairman would seek legal advice, which
would also be of value in connectiàn with the Department of
Criminology practicums, on the advisability of a release or
contractual statement.
The Secretary noted that it was impossible to mount the course,
even if approved, in the Spring semester 1977, and that this
had been confirmed by the Dean.
Question was called on the motion, subject to satisfactory
resolution of the issues by the Chairman and the Dean, and a
vote taken. An appropriate memorandum on the issues raised
would be provided.
MOTION CARRIED"
Two additional memoranda from T. W. Calvert, dated October 28,
1976 and' December 7, 1976, have been added to the original submission.

MEMORANDUM
This is further to my memo. of October 28 regarding our proposed
"Internship".
We proposed that grading should be on a Pass/Fail basis. I still
believe that this is appropriate but we would not object if it is felt
by S.C.U.S. that this should be Pass/Withdraw. Certainly if for any
reason a student could not function effectively in the working environ-
ment
and
his em1oinent was terminated he would have to withdraw.

I attach the proposal for Kin 405-5, Internship.
This has been modified to meet the objectives of the FIDS UGCC
at its meeting on September 29.
This course should be added to the list of upper level
Kinesiology electives from which our majors must select 30 credits.
It should be noted that the Kinesiology major requires 42 credits
in upper level Kinesiology courses of which 12 (Kin 326-3, 405-3,
406-3, 407-3) are specified and 30 are chosen from all other upper
level Kinesiology courses.

RATIONALE FOR KIN 450-5 INTERNSHIP
The Kinesiology degree programs at Simon Fraser
provide a very basic, largely scientific education in the factors
which determine human performance.
?
The degrees do not prepare
students for any specific careers or professions but provide a
solid basis for those going into further professional training
in medicine, rehabilitation, industrial safety, human factors,
recreation or education.
?
This "Internship" will provide under-
graduates with an opportunity to relate their academic preparation
to real world problems before they complete their degrees.
?
This
should add relevance to further academic course work.
Obviously considerable care must be taken in
selecting a suitable environment for an internship.
?
It will
be important to ensure that the student is supervised on a daily
basis by a person (in the working environment) who has academic
training relevant to Kinesiology.
?
General supervision will also
be provided by a faculty member in the department.
?
The student
will summarize his achievements and experience in a written report
to his supervisors. Grading will be on a Pass/Fail basis.
The Department Chairperson will appoint a faculty member
to act as co-ordinator of the Internship Program.
?
The co-ordinator will
contact institutions and organizations to solicit internships and will
recommend to the Department on which situations are suitable for placement
of our students. ?
Normally it will be expected that the student will become
a full-time employee of the organization with which the internship is arranged
and that this employment will be for a full semester.
?
The student will
normally be compensated at a rate appropriate to the duties performed.
Typical situations in which we hope to arrange internships and with which
we already have tentative contacts are the Workers' Compensation Board,
the G.F. ?
Strong Rehabilitation Centre, the Prosthetics Unit of V.G.H.,
the Safety Engineering Department of various forrest industry and mining
.
companies, the coronary rehabilitation programs of the YMCA and in appropriate
departmentof the Provincial and Federal governments.
