Objectives of the Course.
With the addition of ENGL 373, students will be able to
take more than one course in creative writing, whereas at present
the student with a serious interest in writing is limited to one
course. ?
The content and emphasis of the course are at the discretion
?
of the instructor, but student demand for work in particular
genres will likely affect the instructor's choices.
?
The course,?
like ENGL 372, will be in workshop or seminar form, and will study
the process and development of the students' own writing, and the
problems associated with the creative process.
We are granting credit towards the English major, minor, and
honors requirements in English courses for only one such course,
although a second course may be applied to general credit require-
ments for graduation. The majority of the Department feels that
we would reduce the students' range in historical and theoretical
courses if we were to allow two creative writing courses to apply
toward our 32 hours major requirements, 16 minor requirements and
52 honors requirements. ?
But there is considerable demand from
?
students (in our own and other departments) for work in creative
writing, and our faculty include.s a number of important Canadian
writers who are both eager and competent to meet this demand.
There are precedents for the move to an upper level course which
carries general elective credit:
?
in DLLL, literature in translation
courses exist for the general enlightenment of students both within
and from outside the department, but do not allow major or minor
credit in the specific language and literature of the major or
minor.
It should be noted that the instructor must give permission
for enrollment. ?
Normally this will mean that the instructor will
look at work previously written by the student in order to deter-
mine his or her seriousness and level of accomplishment. The two
courses (ENGL 372, and the proposed ENGL 373) are not sequential
in the sense that one would have to be taken before the other,
although it is possible that a student beginning a substantial
work of fiction, poetry, or drama in one course could develop it
further, with continued guidance, in the second.
?
Because it is?
unavoidable in such courses, where a creative writing program
as such does not exist, that students will have arrived at various
levels of accomplishment, we do not propose to make one course a
prerequisite for the other.
?
Less accomplished students should
?
benefit not only from the guidance of the instructor but from
reading the work and hearing comments from the more accomplished
students.
